fayth is now 10 weeks old....................
when fayth was born i had a lot of trouble with keeping her feeds down, upto now shes always had that problem, i tried every bottle going, every single colic tratment, acid reflux meds, different milk, ive been on sma, aptimal, aptimal comfort. shes been admited to hospital as i just could not take anymore as she was in a lot of pain, they gave me acid reflux meds- ranitidine and dompiredone and gaviscon, they didnt seem to work and was back to where she was being in alot of pain every gulp she took. fayth was born 9lbs when she was born and has not put on a lot of weight as she only weighs 10.5lb now. health visitor seems to be a lil worried but the doctor doesnt seem to care! ive tried everything and now i thought i would try something different, ive put her on sma lactose free milk, it seems to get rid of the pain but she still isnt taking down alot of feed and is only managing 3oz each feed and seems to be crying a lot of a evening. also i forgot to mention, fayth had really bad skin and was very spotty and since putting her on the lactose milk it has totaly cleared up. I love her so much but it does stress me and my partner out so much and were not enjoying her like we should be! is anybody going through the same with their baby and can give me some advice please

:hugs: My LO has cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) and has done since birth. When she was tiny she suffered from silent reflux, which was improved by ranitidine, but I knew that it was the milk that was the problem. She was switched to a prescription formula (Aptamil pepti) and improved a little, but always had digestive troubles. I kept nagging the dr and eventually she was switched to an amino acid based formula - Nutramigen AA. This type of formula is 100% milk free and is prescribed to babies with CMPI who can't tolerate anything else. The problem is that it's extremely expensive, so GPs won't usually prescribe it.

From the symptoms you've described it's entirely possible that your LO has CMPI - the skin problems are a symptom too. Google, and you'll find a more comprehensive list of symptoms. If your LO does have CMPI, lactose free milk will do little to help - it's the proteins that babies are intolerant to, rather than lactose (which is a sugar).

Your LO will really have to be seen by a paediatrician if you want to get anywhere. A referral will take a good few weeks, so I honestly believe it's best to take LO to A&E, where they will have to be seen by a paediatrician straight away. Hopefully they will prescribe a formula more suited to CMPI. Neocate and Nutramigen AA are the best types of formula, but sometimes they will want to try a hydrolysed formula first. It's all quite confusing, but I can explain the differences if you like :haha:

If you have any questions I'm happy to help - Holly is now 16 months old and still suffers from CMPI so I have a fair bit of experience!

I hope something gets sorted soon, I know how awful it is to have a baby that suffers x x

Intollerence and reflux often go hand in hand alot of intollerent babies have reflux as a symptom of the intollerence, tbh you need to request to see a peadiatrition if you haven't already

if the ranitidine isnt helping the reflux you probabaly need omeprizol which needs to be perscribed by a pead, you can also discuss with him any concerns about intollerence and he can perscribe the milks you need
Alot of them like to start on nutramigen your LO is young enough to accept this milk its not very nice and over 3 months can be a bit hit or miss if they will take it.

if it carries on you might need then the nutramigen AA or Neocate (we have neocate for our Alyssa)

imo if you feel your baby is having a milk problem then your probably right as you know her

Feel free to ask if you have any questions or owt ive had two girlys with milk problems (Sophina CMPI and lactose intollerence and alyssa has milk allergie) and all three have been refluxers and the severity of there reflux did coinside with there intollerence/allergie amounts

Our baby was very colicky and only poo'd every 3-4 days and would cry that whole day that she was going to have her bm. We had her on Similac Sensitive, and it wasn't working. We recently switched to Similac Alimentum, and it works like a charm!

I might be way off here but my lo has similar issues and we've just discovered he is Tongue and lip tied. He has been diagnosed as having reflux and colic but the medications just didn't make any difference. He cries through bottles, only taking 3oz and then refusing the rest until an hour later when he wants more. We've not been enjoying our lo as much as we should either, next week we are taking him to get his ties clipped and we are hopeful that this will stop his problems.

Here's a link of common symptoms caused by Tongue tie:

I would urge you to make sure your lo isn't tongue tied.

I think SMA do a soya milk have you tried that?

My DH and SIL were both baby milk intolerant and had to have soya milk.. so think my LO is going to end up down that route good luck! :) X

My LO had very similar symptoms at that age. She was switched to Aptamil Pepti which also didnt quite do it for her but improved things for a little while. She was then switched to Neocate which worked wonders. In the end the health visitor got the prescription sorted for us. I had to tell them what was wrong and persist until they listened to us. Going to the doctor and telling them symptoms just seems to make them hand out Gaviscon like its going out of style when it often isnt the problem. She was cows milk protein intolerant and it was sorted with a milk change.

The soya formulas arent recommended until 6 months, something to do with reproduction in later life i was told. My DH had it as a baby though and he is fine! Its apparently a bit of new research.

Keep trying with your health visitor. They can completely bypass the doctor and get a dietitian to get you a prescription if you feel its something your LO needs to try. Good luck!
