Hello,

My friend's baby is 9 weeks old and suffering badly with colic. Her GP told her to give him a bottle of Actimel (half in morning and half at night) as its proven to help babies with stomach problems in the same way it does with adults. She took this advice and it seems he is cured!

Has anyone else heard of this or tried it? I would like to try it with my almost 12 week old son who doesn't have colic but does have a very sensitive tummy and is very windy etc but worried he is too young and this is just one GP's view.

Many thanks,

:)

Do you mean Aptimil Comfort Milk for Colic? My baby is on this but it's specifically for babies with constipation ... I wouldn't just change him onto if if he doesn't really need it because it gives them really loose runny nappies, my baby suffered from constipation and it's the only reason he's on it.

Really interesting but I guess it would be no good if the baby has colic because of lactose intolerance. The problem with colic is that it seems to be caused by all sorts of things. When my baby turned 6 months I started giving her probiotic yogurt and my health visitor said I was better off with greek because of higher fat content and because breast milk contains probiotics anyway. Apparently formula fed babies are more likelt to have colic- some think this is because they swallow more air....maybe it's because they don't get the probiotic in breastmilk...

We did comfort milk :) plus dummies and we saw an osteopath who helped loads :)

Comfort milk has half (or actually i think it could be 40%?, something like that) the lactose that normal formula has.

The comfort milk also has prebiotics that I do not think the normal Aptimil does, which helps with constipation.

That's true about the lack of prebiotics though, when I had to stop breastfeeding this is something that concerned me and started giving my baby a prebiotic safe for infants called BioGaia

Sorry, I mean Actimel, the probiotic yogurt drink!

That actually makes some sense...but id be reluctant to do it, id seek your own gps advice before following advice that was made for your friend!

Sorry ... in that case nothing I said makes sense! haha :)

But as I said i use a prebiotic for my baby called https://www.biogaia.com/ if you want to check that out

I got probiotic powder for Daisy from her dietician when she was tiny but not the actual actimel drink you get for adults albeit it maybe does the same thing. They often prescribe it (the powder) for c section babies if they are having colicky type symptoms. Never heard of the actimel being prescribed though. Its not something i would have felt comfortable with tbh. x

i wouldn't give my 9 week old yoghurt no way, i wonder why the doc didn't just prescribe the probiotic powder that PP's have mentioned that would be a much better idea.
