Advanced Maternal Age Counseling? What happens?

I'm 36 and pregnant with baby number three. I had on OB appointment this morning and was asked what testing I wanted. I opted for the same as with my previous pregnancies. Nothing that isn't 100% accurate, and no amnio. I've had the same OB since 2005, and we have a great relationship. All he asked is if I would ever terminate due to a negative result. My answer was no, so he let it go. I am so sorry you had such a crappy initial experience. My OB did call me an "old pro" though... Thanks for that!

I am an old amateur!!! Ha ha ha.

One of the ladies in my MFM clinic said "you are older than you look... old in the world of pregnancy I mean" :). This was probably a compliment :)

When he asked me if I wanted an amnio I said, "are you asking because I'm old?" He said, "YES!" He's a funny, shor,t stalky man, very hairy, with a beard. Reminds me of Robin Williams.

Hi Peggy! I'm so sorry you've been through that. Some medical professionals just have no common sense. I am in my 30's but still slightly under 35 but I went through some pretty bad times due to them wanting me to take some of the so-called optional tests. Their only modus operandi seems to be to terrify about the possibilities. Very bad approach and philosophy. Very irresponsible too when dealing with the mental health of someone who is pregnant. Have you tried talking to a counselor or social worker? It helped me to talk to a social worker but that may be risky if they are at the hospital. If you can find one outside that would be best. I hope the next practicioner you choose will be more agreeable :flower:

My therapist (I have been seeing her for 3 years) went through this same thing with her baby, she also refused the testing. She totally understands and that really does help.

If I'm 34 now, but I'll turn 35 next month, will they offer the testing to me?

I've never heard of it either. I had my first at 36 and am having my second now at 39. As far as my midwives are concerned I'm healthy and having a great pregnancy just like last time. I do get the extra NT scan offered because I'm over 35, but really only for the extra look at the baby, not because of any real concern that there's anything wrong.

My friend was 34, but would deliver after 35 and she was "Counseled" about it (they scared the crap out of her). I think it depends on where you are a patient. Not everyplace does.
