advice on scans please....

Hey ladies

I went to the doctors yesterday which was to let him know I was pregnant and he told me and DH we needed to decide which hospital we wanted to have our baby and also if we wanted to have any of the tests done. He then said he would book us in for a 20 week scan? I asked if they had stopped doing 12 week scans which he said they had. I am really confused now as I thought that if anything was wrong at 12 weeks then you would know rather than leaving it later to 20 weeks....only someone I knew went for their 12 week scan and her baby had died so sad so now worried that if I don't have the 12 week scan I wouldn't find anything out until 20 weeks or am I being silly??

Has anyone else been told this? This is first time so all a bit new.

any advice would be grateful xx

I'm having a 12 weeks scan still. If you are really worried I'd go back and say that you want a 12 week one for piece of mind

Hi, I'm havin 12wk scan too. With my 1st i only got the 12wk scan and not the 20wk and the 12 wk is the most important and detects any problems! I'd check with your midwife. xx

I didn't think I was going to get the 12 week scan (as I had turned down all the triple tests), however when I went to my OB at 13 weeks she sent me for a dating ultrasound. I would ask your doctor to make sure.

I thought it was a bit strange as I thought the 12 week one would be the most important too all my friends that have had babies recently had both and they would be under the same hospital as me hmmm will speak to the doctor on Monday when i see him

I don't think they always send you for 12 week scan, i had one but i told them i was unsure of my dates. My sister did not get one done until her 20 week scan.

I don't think one is more important that the other. They're both very important and it's annoying that some places are only offering one. 12 weeks is important to judge your due date and make sure baby is ok because unfortunatly there is quite a few which m/c but don't come away, so you wouldn't know. 20 weeks is also very important because it's when they check the full anatomy to make sure all babies organs are growing properly, which they can't see till 18 weeks at the earliest.

I had a 12 week scan privately, so they could check the nuchal fold. If they wont give you one, you can always pay for it - it'll be £90 - £180, but well worth it!

not greedy at all , i had a 8 wk scan and then i was only meant to get a 20 wk so i opted for a 16 wk private one too. i am excited for my next scan.

There are many areas that do not do the 12 weeks scan. If there was anything wrong 9 out of 10 times your body would tell you one way or another. Try not to panic! x

I'm like 5 mins preg and I want one now too!!

no i gotta 16 n a 20 but i only had my 12th week. never hada earlier one x scans what u want more of u can never be greedy xx
