Advice please - metformin or clomid with PCOS?

Hello ladies,

just wondering if anyone would mind sharing their experiences. I'm 29 and have PCOS. We've been ttc for about 2 years now - have been pg twice but lost both. First pregnancy took a year, then had a mmc at 10 weeks. Then it only took 3 months for me to get pg again but sadly ended in a natural mc at 12 weeks.

It's now been over a year since we last conceived and I ended up being referred, but every time I go to the hospital I see a different doctor and get told different things. The first guy said no way would he prescribe metformin for me because I'm not overweight. But in Dec I saw a woman who told me she would happily let me try it. Should I? What experiences have people had, has anyone gotten pregnant just from metformin? How long were you on it? I don't know whether to just skip it and go straight onto clomid, though I am worried about side effects. Just getting rather fed up now - am constantly waiting for ovulation then waiting to test and always being disappointed!

Thanks in advance to any replies x x

Hey there. You don't have to be over-weight to take metformin. It has nothing to with your weight. I take 1500 mg a day. It hasn't gotten me pregnant yet, but it is regulating my periods, which I never had before. I went eight month without getting AF before metformin.

I did the metformin/clomid combination for a couple of months, but I am clomid resistant. There is no guarantee it will work

Hope they make up your minds and give you something!

Thanks Lauren :flower: Yeah I thought it was strange he said no to metformin because of my weight when I had read it was ok to use with PCOS regardless of size. But the other doc said it was fine, so just annoying to have 2 different opinions!

It would be great to have more regular periods. I take it you mean that now AF is regular that means you are also ovulating? I do ovulate on my own but it takes me til approx CD 36.

Had no idea there was such a thing as clomid resistant. So sorry it didn't work for you. Is there anything else they'll try? Good luck to you x

Hey ya!

Even though I get AF every month now, I still do not ovulate. I have only ovulated once in 25 months. But that may not be because of PCOS. I also have high prolactin levels, which is another contributor to no ovulation. It may be different for you though, I am not sure.

Right now I am on different medications for my prolactin levels. Once I am done this medication, I may go back on clomid (while continuing metformin) to see if it will work now that my levels would be back to normal.

Pretty confusing stuff!

Oh Lauren! So sorry about the high prolactin levels. Mine are also raised but they didn't seem too bothered about it so we're not doing anything about it right now. Hopefully the meds you're on now will do the trick...how long do you have to be on them for?
