Toby has been having longer feeds in the night than in the day. Over the last few days he seems to be latching on better so is feeding for less time but last night he would only feed for a few sucks each time before breaking off. I could only get a few minutes food in him at a time before he would give up. It meant that we were feeding off and on all through the night but he would only feed for a few mins each time. I think his nose is quite snotty one side and I am not sure if this is part of the problem. However, this morning he has fed solidly for 15 minutes. I also noticed in the night that every time I put him down he seemed to have really bad wind but when I winded him nothing came up. I am SOOO tired today and am not sure what I will do if we have the same thing all over again tonight. What do you think is causing the problem?

Most babies have no problem feeding even if their noses are congested. It would make more sense that this is a flow issue. First thing in the morning you would have more milk adn a faster flow which would keep him interested adn drinking. During the night when a mum's supply is generally lower the flow can become slow which the babies get too frsutrated with. Have you tried breast compressions? You would start a compression as soon as your baby begins sucking and hold the compression until baby stops sucking. There is a great video on compressions here

This is an information sheet on how to do breast compressions too :-)

He is also coming up on 6 weeks, which is a big growth spurt.

He could be frustrated with the slow flow, and with the growth spurt looming, he is really getting frustrated.

He may just need to pass gas rather than burp. I remember Brenn having horrible horrible gas when he was tiny. It is just part of a newborn and their little systems getting going. I found massaging his tummy, in a circle going from the right to the left, down and around, then pushing is knees up to his chest would help get it out and moving. I would also bend his knees and then holding his calves, would do a little half rolling twist with him moving his knees from the left to the right. That would really help move the gas.
