Hi Ladies,

Well for the past 5 days I have been combination feeding Abigail but today she has been soley formula fed, as I have only been combination feeding for the purpose of helping my milk to dry up.

Anyway, she is on Aptamil but oh my God, she is hardwork when she wakes up for a feed. She will scratch me, fling her head back and scratch at her face even though she only has to wait 5 minutes for it to heat up. I am starting to wonder whether I should wake her for a feed?

Do your babies act like this as well?

Also, she only poos 1-2 times a day whereas before it was 5 times a day ( breastfed) is this normal? It looks yellowy, greenish, brownish and my fiance said it is the consistency of a " Mcdonalds Milkshake " .....Hmmm.

When she needs to poo, she will squirm, grunt, scream out? Basically she just looks so uncomfortable and it carries on for about half an hour to an hour off and on sometimes. Is this all normal as well?

Also, in this heat, are you all just carrying on with your normal feeding regime? Is anyone giving there babies water? Or is that not allowed?

Sorry for all the questions

She might just not be used to having to wait a little for her feed - she'll soon get used to it. I wake my LO for a feed as he is the kind of baby who really needs a schedule and he does sometimes get upset - I try to have the feed ready to go so I can pop it straight in his mouth!
FF babies do poo less than BF babies. Mine averages once every 2 days or so. They are yellow/brownish and quite runny, like peanut butter - he's on Aptamil too, it is quite well known for giving babies poo like this as the prebiotics in it are designed to stop babies getting constipated. He also goes bright red and pushes when he needs a poo. I would say as long as the poo is not hard he's probably not constipated and it's OK.
You can give cooled boiled water if you want - I do if it's really hot and he's not doing as many wet nappies as usual. Only thing is it can fill them up so best to give it in between feeds so it can be digested before the next feed.

Honey, all of the above sounds normal, and about the same as Jaiden, it will work itself out in the end, and she'll get used to waiting for the few mins.
Hope your doing ok otherwise

My little boy was combi fed from day 1. He had expsressed breast milk all day and then SMA gold through the night usualy 2-3 bottles. But its actually very common for breast fed babies not to go for a poo up a week. With formula its everyday. I gave Bryn cooled boiled water once and he projected it back at me along with his milk!!!! With the heat he usually has 6oz but only been takin 3-4oz but having a bottle every 2-3hours instead of 4-5hours. But now the weather has cold off he is back to norm. When Bryn strains for a poo he almost goes purple when hes also concentrating. Id say keep on with what you are doing. Its new for both of you. Hope this helps x

Hey ER.. yes all of the above sound normal I'm afraid. They are impatient little things aren't they?! .. I've had to put scratch mittens on Maddy as she's forever clawing at her face when she's fishing for her feed.. it even feels like I'm fighting her to get her hands out of the way.. she's so strong! I stopped heating her bottles up and just make up bottles in advance of boiled water.. store them in the cupboard, not the fridge (they have to be used up within 24 hours).. then give them to her at room temperature. So she only has to wait a min while I spoon the powder in. I also have found that since I've been not heating up, she's posseting (bringing some back up) less, and is slightly better with her wind also.
Maddison has also definitely started pooing less since she's been off my milk. Like Abigail, she used to poo with every nappy change and it was of very loose, almost watery consistency. Now it's 1-2 times a day and much thicker. It's still yellow tho. Green colour can suggest a bit of tummy ache. So just keep an eye on it.. but it's probably just because of the transition from breast to formula.
The grunting etc is normal (it's horrible isn't it :().. they do look like they're in so much pain sometimes, bless them. Maddy even cries when she's trying to let out bottom burps.
And yes.. I offer Maddy cooled boiled water when it's hot weather. She'll prob take up to an ounce in between feeds. but like I said.. it's only really been when we've had them hot days. Abigail will only drink it if she really needs it, so don't worry if she refuses. Try not to fill her up on water tho if it's around the time she's due a feed. Altho she'll prob turn her nose up at it and spit it out anyway if she's hungry. Babies sure know what they want! :)
If you need to know anything.. feel free to pm me on facebook. xxxxxx
