Alcohol

Hey I haven't read the whole thread seems like it turned into a bit of a debate! But I just wanted to say they I was totally craving blue wkd a few weeks ago... So my lovely OH found somewhere that sells blue slush puppies and although it was exactly the same i did get the blue wkd feel and it cured the craving! Haven't wanted any since!

Xxx

I havent touched any alcohol since i found out i was pregnant, and doubt i will touch it now , my doctor did say 1 - 2 units is ok but i'll be staying off the booze :D x

I see a link has been posted, but just adding this. Personally I won't be drinking any alcohol while preg, but I can easily live without it as I am not a big drinker. I didn't drink with any of mine.

I drank a few glasses of kopparberg in the first 2 weeks of my pregnancy (I obviously didn't know I was pregnant) but have not had anything since. Non alcoholic kopparberg is lovely and tastes exactly like the alcoholic version!

I'm in Canada, and we have public service commercials warning about alcohol during pregnancy. Consensus here is that there's never been a study to show what amount of alcohol it takes to harm a baby, so they recommend zero alcohol. I didn't know I was preg till 7 weeks, and did some partying before then. Got right drunk twice, smoked pot, cigs. Now I worry. Not because anyone here fear mongered me, but because if it's bad to give a baby those things it can't be healthy for a fetus either. I will not be drinking or smoking anything for the rest of my pregnancy.

Sorry I hope my post didn't make you freak out again :flower: - like I said I am just quite vocal about it because my friends think I over-worry with these things. I'm sure your LO will be fine. I think they are more resilient than we all think, otherwise the human race would have died out by now :winkwink:

Not causing any debate........... I haven't drunk any alcohol with this pregancy but with my 2 previuos pregnancy i suffered from low iron and was told by the doctor to drink a little guinness every day!

Both children were fine.

Popping over from the 3rd Trimester section of the forum :ninja:

I just wanted to say that I found out I was pregnant on Halloween Day and had consumed alcohol between the point of conception to the time when I got my positive HPT result. We had used contraception and weren't expecting this baby but, my baby is absolutely fine. Since finding out I was pregnant, I had 1 Kopperburg at Christmas and on my partners 18th, I had a shot glass amount of a low unit (0.7 units per 150ml glass) mixed in a large glass of coca cola...

It isn't recommended to consume any alcohol in the 1st Trimester of your pregnancy and after the 1st Trimester, it is advised to only consume 1-2 units of alcohol once a week. This is the United Kingdom's advisement though so I am unaware what the regulations are in respect to alcohol in the USA. Also. It is advised here that 1 small glass of red wine a week can help with heartburn :flower:

I'm just wondering if anyone is still having the odd alcoholic drink?

I've not had any alcohol yet but i've so been craving a glass of wine or blue WKD!

Would it be the worst thing in the world? Is anyone else still having the odd drink?

Thanks =D

Hi :) im 9 weeks and 2 days and last night i just fancied a blue wkd! lol so i bought a cheap one from asda with a lower % and took it home .... didnt even really drink alot! about a quarter of a bottle thats it, just didnt fancy it! but i do sometimes find myself fancying a little tipple and my doc said theres nothing wrong with that... i wouldnt go for anything with a high % just incase just stick to the near enough fizzy pop! LOL

xxxx

I havent drunk anything since I found out,but then I didnt really drink before either so its not something I usually do anyway:thumbup:

I'm missing the drink too :( Before I found out I was pregnant I went out on a night out and got really drunk. When, a week later, I discovered that I was pregnant I felt soo guilty! Atm I'm not touching drink because it's advised that you sholdn't in the first trimester.

However, my midwife told me that after 12 weeks you're allowed the occasional drink (like one glass of wine) if it's a special occasion like a wedding or a birthday etc. I'll probably have a drink for my friend's birthday which is in a couple of month but probably just a shandy or a WKD or something then be straight onto the J2O's lol! Mind you, after a few months of not drinking you're gonna feel pretty tipsy after one wine :P xx

It's nice to see people talking sensibly about drinking alcohol whilst pregnant. I've been looking into this and some forums are so over the top about it it's ridiculous, It annoys me how some women preach about not drinking anything whilst pregnant, when they probably never enjoyed a drink anyway. I've not drank anything since I found out 7 weeks ago and I am a big red wine fan. I've had mixed opinions from health professionals. My doctor said abstain completely where as my midwife said the odd glass once a week in her opinion is fine (she's had four children). Everyone I've known who has been pregnant had the odd glass here and there and been absolutely fine. I never expected to be told to abstain completely, but the doctors do like to cover themselves. Luckily my other half has given up the juice aswel so that helps.

It's completely personal choice I had a few shandies on my birthday with my son that was in the 3rd trimester. I completely went off alcohol as before I found out I suddenly couldn't stand the stuff-should have been a clue!! This time I have abstained completely as we have tried for 4 years then done icsi to get pregnant so for me I'm not gonna do anything that will jeopardise my babies! Having said that my friend can get pregnant anytime she wants and has a glass or 2 over a week and her kids are fine so do what feels right for you :)

Persoanlly, I have done in my last pregnancy and I have/will drink in this one. Not a lot midn - laround 1/4 large glass of wine with dinner or a small spirit with dinner throughout an evening so its a very very slow intake. But I don't see a problem with having a little. Everything in moderation is my moto.

I found this one a FAS site - might help if you are on the fence about this. Everyone is intitled to their own opinion on what to do and I wouldn't jump on anyone for being a teetotaler when I do drink. :hugs:

It does not go beyond the facts: that most children diagnosed with frank FAS have had overtly alcoholic mothers (who drank at least eight to 10 drinks a day); that children born to women who had four to six drinks a day have had subtle signs of FAS/FAE; that at two drinks a day, the only indisputable effect noted has been subtly lower birth weight; and that below two drinks a day there is no concrete evidence for an effect on the fetus. Thus, from a strictly scientific viewpoint, one cannot say that one drink a day during pregnancy is dangerous to the baby.

YOu've made me feel better.

Before I got my BFP i used to drink maybe two glasses of white wine a night. I'm finding now at 11 weeks I am craving a glass now and again. Apart from my birthday when I had a slip i haven't touched a drop.

I have my 12 week scan on Thursday so all going well my celebrate with a small tipple!

Thankyou very much for the replies ladies! I spoke to my friend who is a midwife and she said the odd glass every now and again is fine and FAS is only really found in alcoholic mothers who are drinking alot every day. If all goes well after my 12 week scan I think I will be celebrating with a blue WKD (or cheaper less alcohol % version) only 3 weeks to go! xx

I had the odd glass of wine or bubbly on special occasions when I was expecting my LO. Before I was pg I enjoyed a glass or two of wine most evenings, so going to down to one or two a month was hard! To be honest I didn’t ask my mw as I thought I’d get the hardline approach of being told not to touch a drop! Lol. I just used my common sense and did a bit of research online myself. :winkwink:
