My Dr put me on alesse28 birth control. The pharmacist called my Dr to make sure she prescribed the correct pill and she said she did. So I started taking it im on day 4 of taking the pill now...

Just wondering if any one else who is exclusively breastfeeding is taking this birth control pill? Also will me taking this pill make me have a period when I go onto the white (placebo) pills? Any advice is great :)

My son is 3 months btw :)

Hi. I read your post and wanted to respond from the perspective of a Certified Lactation Counselor. Progestin-only forms of birth control are typically the only form of hormonal birth controls that are considered okay for nursing mothers. I would double check on the hormonal dosage in Alesse but I think it is a progesterone and estrogen combination pill which may be of concern since you are breastfeeding exclusively. Best of luck and congrats on your breastfeeding success!!

Thanks! :)
it is a combination pill, I talked to my dr and my sons nurse, they all say it is okay to take, but Im not all for taking it, just worried I guess lol but so far so good while taking it.

My doctor told me that it was only the progesterone only pill or an iud because combination type pills could lower your supply.

I would advise switching off of that if possible. I had a friend that was put on a combination pill and lost her milk supply within a month or two even though her doctor said it was fine. She is now formula feeding because she was never able to get her supply back up.

I think generally they only recommend progesterone only or non hormonal BC methods while breastfeeding just to be on the safe side.
