Posting here as seems to be more members than other topics! Hope it’s ok .

DD1 has no known allergies but does have eczema and possible asthma

DD2 has CMPA - Cows Milk Protien Allergy.

Was wondering if anyone else’s children or even yourself have allergies? Maybe we could post and discuss relevant issues etc? I’ve not noticed a section for this so please point me in the right direction if there is one! Thanks ! X

Hi .
My children don't have allergies luckily. My DS has asthma, he's used inhalers since he was a baby but he seems to be growing out of it (touch wood!).
I have an allergy to a preservative. I found out what I'm allergic to in the summer and I'm still getting used to checking ingredients on everything.

Hi Eleanor !

That’s great your children don’t have allergies ! Glad your boy is outgrowing his asthma it’s such a dangerous illness and unfortunalty some people done realise how dangerous it can be! We are trailing DD1 on an inhaler now I’m just hoping it’s just because the weather is so bad at the minute !

Checking the labels on everything is so tiring even when your used to it ! There’s an app called food maestro it may be of help to you?

xx

DS1 had Lactose Intollerance which only seems to play up if he's stressed or has anxiety.

DS3 has a mild sensitivity and has been diagnosed with Cows' Milk Protein Allergy but can have ice-cream for some reason. We think that freezing might alter the protein's structure which would explain why he is why he's okay with that and nothing else.

DS4 we found out yesterday probably has a severe sensitivity with Cows' Milk Protein Allergy as I took him up to the doctor covered head to toe in a red rash. We ruled out heat rash as it didn't fade when stripped off, ruled out clothing sensitivity as he was wearing organic cotton under the suit we questioned and had rashes where the organic cotton was against his skin, ruled out serious conditions and the possibility of a viral infection. I've done research and looked into it more as DS3 just threw up every tin of formula we gave him before we tried the Goat. Given that DS4 presented with a rash but seemed rather healthy, the congestion, irritability, cluster feeding, shortened and restless sleep periods he has had over the last several days, wheeziness, frequent spitting up after a breast feed and me wondering if the screaming was colic related, all points to the same issue as DS3 - just that DS4 is a LOT more sensitive and that sensitivity could be fatal if the rash causes swelling. He has none of those issues if I give him a bottle of Goat formula. And we only discovered that after the rash came up somewhere in the 10 hours after I ate a sneaky block of chocolate. But I'll have my regular GP confirm it first because I'm now put in a position where I need to apply for assistance under severe medical issues for Goat formula. $80 a week for formula now because DS3 still can't have Cow milk.

It can be really scary :nope:. I hope that the inhalers help your DD. The weather is definitely terrible for asthma sufferers at the moment. Roll on spring! Ah thank you, mine is an environmental allergy so I guess the app won't cover it, but I'm going to look and see whether there is something similar I can use.

Hey

My 6 year old has CMPA. His been dairy free ever since we discovered his allergy at 6 months when we began weaning.

I think it’s a good idea to make a thread to discuss these issues x

Wacky that must be really stressful for you all . I’m not sure why he can tolerate ice cream . I always assumed this would be one of the worst things to have as it’s not cooked . Always thought they couldn’t have goat milk either as same proteins . We actually never tried got milk . She can only tolerate coconut milk so we have stuck with that ! Have to look into that . We had a very slow start to the milk ladder but now she can tolerate upto yoghurts. Cheese was a no go a few weeks back so have to revisited that .

I found getting her diagnosed was such a painful expierence . Always getting fobbed off and told it was one thing or another . I hope your GP appointment goes well Wacky and your little one settles down . It’s hard having one baby with CMPA never mind 4 . Any child with a milk allergy should be entitled to free milk with vouchers . Here in the U.K. you get Healthy Start vouchers for fresh milk and vegetables if you unemployed or low income . I think they should roll this out for children with allergies regardless of income for their milk as it’s so expensive !

Sorry Eleanor I thought you meant a preservative in food lol hope you find something more suitable !

Babyjan have you tried the milk ladder yet .

Thanks for posting ladies it’s always nice to know your not alone and to get opinions and thoughts !

Sorry for any typos on my phone lol x

Babybump: his allergy is still too severe to try the ladder. His due for another skin prick test in May so we shall see how that goes.

My son has pack lunch at school and I’m lost for ideas. I feel like he has pretty much same things. As well as being allergic his also very fussy and underweight

As for getting diagnosed we had a hard time too. Our gp refused to even refer us for further testing! We only managed to get seen by specialist and dietician because my son was always in and out of hospital with viral induced wheeze (his also asthamic) at 6 months we were admitted with broncholitis, it was then that I was able to voice my concerns about all the symptoms he had from eating dairy. Thankfully that dr got a dietician to see us straight away and from there on we were able to see allergy specialist get a skin prick test when he was a year and offfically have him diagnosed with CMPA

I completely agree on getting some vouchers or help with children with severe allergies like CMPA!

Hope his skin test goes well and you are able to attempt the ladder . It’s such a worry !

Oh no a fussy eater is not a good combination and I know we all stress over our children eating . I also feel like my DD used to eat a lot of the same food . She still does to some extent but DD1 is extremely fussy and eats way less than DD2 why do they worry us !!

Many GPs are simply unaware of the symptoms of CMPA and diagnose reflux etc . I’m glad you got seen by a specialist and got him on the right path . We wouldn’t have to struggle to get them diagnosed .

Thanks Wacky for your post . Me and DH are going to try for baby no3 soon and I was wondering about subsequent children have CMPA given the fact DD1 is fine but DD2 isn’t even though I did nothing different both pregnancies . Remains to be seen if third baby had any issues .. least this time I will be armed and ready !! Xx

Babybump I did worry a lot about my second having allergies but other than having dry eczema like skin as a baby he is fine.

What symptoms does your DD get and when did you realise she has CMPA?

We might be trying for #3 too x

Peanuts and possibly eggs for my 9 month old girl. Peanuts are really terrible, she vomits for hours afterwards, terrible lethargy, stomach cramps. The eggs are a mild rash around her mouth so far. I'm praying she grows out of them, especially the peanut one. I don't want her to be the kid allergic to peanuts. :(

I did a little research - freezing alters the protein structure found in the dairy so that could be why. But no, CMPA will not mean a child can not have Goat. It's the protein's in the cow dairy that causes the issue - thus renders why Goat is generally a safe alternative. We still for them most part avoid cheese, milk, yoghurt etc. I did give him flavoured milk last night and I really wish I hadn't because I KNEW the end result. We give him it as a treat on occasion even though I know what it does. But yes, I did have a very smelly and runny nappy to change today after it worked it's way though his system. :dohh::sick:

We were very lucky that when I saw my usual GP the other day and told him what happened the week before that he decided he was NOT going to let me risk breastfeeding Jackson because of the rash that came up after I ate chocolate. The GP filled in the Assistance form to help with the cost of his formula so it's a case of waiting for that to be processed and accepted. Until then, it's limited dairy for me. He's a little puffy around the eyes and slightly rashy but as long as I don't have any more than a couple of cups of coffee a day we should be okay for a few more days. And I'm going to take advantage of that because I'm getting a little upset with possibily never breast feeding DS4 again. I'll probably try and do one feed a day as long as I have an 8-12 hour stretch without dairy.

And yes I do agree. If they can do Healthy Start vouchers then they should at least include formula of all sorts to help out low income families or unemployed mothers! Helping Mum to help baby would give baby the best start in life and teach healthy eating habits from the beginning. Maybe NZ should adopt that kind of idea too? The prices on fresh meat, vegetables and dairy in NZ is through the roof! It's cheaper to eat shitty processed foods, frozen veges and take aways here. It's actually disgusting. :growlmad:

Oh wow that’s interesting to know about the goats milk . We were told to completely avoid any other animal milk .

Aww no your poor little one ! Hope he’s ok now and your nose is lol. Those nappies are just awful . It’s horrible when they want what everyone else has ! We actually gave her a lollyice two nights ago and so far no reactions to it which I am surprised about as she reacted to cheese last time .

Awe hun that must be so upsetting and frustrating not being able breastfeed but I’d think positively you breastfeed him and that’s an achievement alone .

I don’t think they will ever change the Healthy Start vouchers unless they are removed altogether due to cut backs.

The price of everything these days is ridiculous . You end up going around all the shops just to get things a little bit cheaper !

Oh no peanuts !! I’ve always known peanuts to be a bad one to be allergic to. Hopefully she will outgrow these by the time she reaches school age .

When you think about it logically, a cow is a cow and a goat is a goat. :) So naturally, there are 2 different proteins. You wouldn't find CMP chain in Goat milk because it's a different species - that's what I would have thought anyway. But Goat is a lot gentler on the stomach because the fat molecules are smaller and the protein chains are shorter. This is mainly why it's easier for babies of CMPA are able to tolerate it. And it's apparently sweeter too. That's what I've been told though of course but if you do look at using Goat milk, research it for yourself and decide with the information presented if it's the best choice for you child. :) Also, because Goat milk contains Lactose as well, that is how we were able to rule out Lactose Intolerance. :)

https://wakethewolves.com/goats-milk-vs-cows-milk-is-there-a-difference/

It's the S1-casein which is found in both cow and goat I have just discovered!! Who knew? :haha: But goat also has 89% less of this than cow milk which is why it could be worth a go. Your little one might be quite okay with it as my 2 little ones are. :happydance:

Unfortunately for us my son is also allergic to goats milk. Dietician told us to try by rubbing a little bit on his lips and they ended up swelling :(

I read that goats milk protein is similar to cows milk protein but not identical so it can go either way. About 30% of babies alergic to cows milk will react to goats milk also.

All three of ours had CMPI. Thankfully they each seem to have grown out of it between the age of 1 and 2.

Can I ask what preservatives you are allergic to? I react badly to some preservatives as well as other chemicals. To start with I just felt unwell but now I get breathing difficulties as well. I read labels on everything and it makes eating out awkward. It something that is difficult to find information about so I am interested in your experience.

Ds1 no known allergies but in hindsight probably had cmpa as a baby

Ds2 cmpa, quorn, fish

Me tuna, had cmpa as a baby

Interesting about the goats milk. We were told to avoid it too but I had it as a baby with no issues.

I wouldn’t worry too much about Breast milk having cmp in. If you cut out dairy now it will start to work it’s way out and I have read bm repairs the gut anyway. I started to cut dairy out at 6 weeks, was probably 12 weeks by the time all dairy and soya was out of my diet (forgot to say he’s allergic to soya too) and I just carried on Breastfeeding. All the Drs we saw were supportive of continued Breastfeeding and we’re still going strong now at 1 year old. So it doesn’t have to be the end if you want to continue. Obviously personal choice whatever you feel comfortable doing but don’t let a dr back you into a corner!
