I've loved the name Vesper (for a girl) for a while, but the fact that it's so unusual put me off using it as a first name and I was going to use it as a middle. Mentioned it to OH though and he really likes it as a first name, so now I'm not sure. Yes, Vesper like the Bond girl, but not after her; it actually means evening star. Bit scared to ask as I know it's unusual, but thoughts?

I dont have much of an opinion on the name itself, I can see it as a name, but my first thought was a scooter x

Hmmm. I'm not sure, I don't hate it but I don't love it either x

I just saw a baby called Vesper on here today! It's quite a cool name. I'm not ballsy enough to ever use it myself but I like it.

its a brand of scooter... thats all I can think and I find it weird in same way its become 'tacky' and 'chavvy' to use names like Mercedes and Portia

Vespa is the scooter. I don't think those car names are tacky, most of the ones that get used for babies were actual people names to begin with.

Makes me think of Vespers, the evening prayers common at Orthodox or Liturgical churches.

For some reason it makes me think of hauntings, ouija boards and the like...Like Casper, the friendly ghost. As if a vesper was the name of a kind of spirit or some such. It's really unusual and I'm not sure I'm a big fan...What could nicknames be? Vespy? Vez? I'm unsure about it.

its become tacky by association

if I met a German girl called Mercedes it wouldn't seem as tacky maybe but the people Ive met and heard of with kids called Mercedes and Portia are very british, lower class, jeremy kyle type chavs, they are quite well know chav names around here along with Vuitton, channel and Armani (maybe its aspirational, like name you kid after something you could never afford to own )

to be fair Ive never heard a chav called Vesper but it makes me think of the scooter that falls in the 'naming after cars' style category

in the same style though I do like Jasper and Casper (although the latter makes me think of ghosts)

I actually like it and I'm normally one for traditional names.

In the village I grew up in someone ended up calling their kids Tia Maria, Jack Daniel and Smirnoff...

Wish I was joking :nope:

I think I remember you posting something about Vesper as a middle name before, as it's a family name? Is that correct?

It's definitely "different" but I don't think it's too "out there" really. I think it could be pretty cute and a nickname could be Vess (like the popular Jess or Tess). I personally just think it doesn't sound so feminine because of the -er ending; however perhaps that's what you're going for - I know not all girl names need to be feminine

lol at least Tia, Maria, Jack and Daniel are acceptable names (although id not put them together) but poor Smirnoff lol surely if you really had to stick with drinks you would go Morgan or Bailey

at least it wasn't white lightning or frosty Jack :haha:

where they alcoholics by any chance

Vespa is the name of a sleezy lapdancing club here :( sounds nice otherwise but does strike me as masculine.

Vespa is the scooter, but Vesper is a Latin name and far predates it. It's like Cleo, it's a name in its own right and always has been, the car is a recent thing.

We wouldn't use a nickname.

Nope I don't really like frilly names at all!

Traditionally in many countries in Europe feminine names end in "a" which obviously sounds similar to "er" Italian for example, feminine words end "a" Maria, male "o" Mario. Sophia, Helena, Ava, Sarah, Lila, Mia, Lola, Eva, etc etc, these are all very feminine names ending with a similar sound so I don't think Vesper sounds masculine!M

It doesn't seem too out there to me, it is the right balance of normal/unique for me. That said I'm not really a fan, it is so-so to me.
