Hey Gang, I'm 11.5 weeks and need to get off my Metformin next week. My doctor told me to get off at 12 weeks, but since it's supposed to help me keep the pregnancy (i'm high risk miscarrier due to PCOS) understandably I'm very nervous. Would love to hear about other people's experiences and side effects if there were any?

Thanks.

I stopped taking mine at 14 weeks with this pregnancy and with my daughter. I was also very nervous but so far everything has been ok. I think it's pretty standard to come off it after the first trimester.

what would be the reason for stopping. I mean diabetes is an issue with pregnancy is it an issue to stay on it. I am not diabetic just curious as to why you would have to stop

Nope I'm still on it. Also for pcos (I have no symptoms of it though, never had except having cysts on my ovaries and not ovulating properly) so I'm not your typical candidate but I was put on met a few years ago and have been ever since.
My glucose test came back normal while on it but then they wanted to mess with it by taking me off metformin, redoing the test (even though it was ok) then seeing my results and going back on it again! Needless to say I declined this second test. If it's not broke, why fix it? I only have 5 weeks left and it's prevented me from getting GD I believe.

My RE told me to stop at 12 weeks, but I drug it out to almost 14 weeks. I was so nervous to stop taking it. I have pcos, but have never had a problem with blood sugar or weight. My RE said it was to help with my low progesterone levels. He assured me it was fine for me to go off since the placenta had taken over. I suppose it just depends on the reason you were taking it and if your doc wants you to come off. I was so glad that I finally stopped taking it because it always made me feel sick!

I was told to stop metformin cold turkey at 11 weeks and 4 days. I was terrified to stop, but I trust my doctor. I stopped taking metformin that same day. I just had an ultrasound yesterday, at 12 weeks and 3 days, and the baby was still going strong, very active, with a strong heartbeat. It's hard not to worry, and it was very terrifying to stop, but I have a great doctor, and I know that he wouldn't tell me to do something if he thought it would harm the baby.

im hypo thyroid- was taking met for pcos- the intake doc I had is a pcos expert- he wanted me to stay on it the whole time- I couldnt keep seeing him cause he doesnt deliver- only does one day a week to stay in practice- but I came off it just into second tri- and i came off slow in about a weeks time- I came off it cause I never got use to it and I was on it for a long time but I have gut issues that no one ever addresses- long story-
but I am now 24/25 weeks and despite a whole mess of problems this baby is still going strong- strong kicks and such- I don't have any other info though cause they messed up my 20 week scan and refuse to re do it so I have no info on baby's kidneys ect- and they lost the maternity 21 results so i dont even know that info!
but if i go by baby's activity and my gut I think everything is ok.

Thanks guys! This is great, sounds like its varying detail. I'll prob taper off starting at 12 weeks. I dont take much at all, but i've been on it for 10 years and have tapered down throughout my entire time on it. I would love to hear about side effects if anyone had any. I'm only on 500mg so hopefully I wont have it too bad.
