Hi girls :)

Baby wombat is slowly getting ready to eat solids. I actually think that he is ready now (he keeps snaching the food he sees from his big brother or me). But I am just so not looking forward to the whole weaning thing. Breastfeeding is so hassle free...

Am thinking about BLW. Maybe that will be a better idea :)

me too. had so many hurdles i feel like i have just started. x

I dreaded it so I left it until just over 6 months and did BLW so it actually hasn't been too bad. He is now 7 months and is still mostly BF

Hi Wombat. We are hoping to do BLW as well as I think it's the most natural step on from BF. The BLW book by Gill Rapsley is brilliant if you need some pointers.xx

wat is blw? do u solely carry on on the breast or start solids at 6 months anyway?

BLW (baby led weaning) is when baby has no purees and starts straight after bf on solid food.
Basically when your baby is ready (ie grabs a banana, soft boiled carrot etc. and stcks it in his mouth and eats it... Well, gums it :) ) you start giving him fingerfoods... (well, this is avery basic description).

so you give them the boob and if they want more then you give them a carrot?
Does this all get explained at some point as i have no idea. Cant i just breastfeed forever? its so convenient.
x

I'm excited but nervous, I'm reading up on BLW and it's definitely for us but definitely after 6 months as I'm so worried about choking (even though it's explained in the book a zillion times that BF babies are very unlikely to choke if they're genuinely ready).

I've never found BF particularly easy so maybe that's why I'm not dreading it? I still plan for Molly to self wean, however.

weaning holds no fear for me because Ive done it before, though not the way I thought it would happen!!! In the end we did BLW (not that it was called that at the time!) at 7 1/2 months onwards, it was great...I have NO idea why people still spoon feed purees etc!
MrsQ read up on BLW, there is lots of info out there that will explain.

just read some bits so basically if i read right, you breastfeed until they can sit up unaided and start reaching for food. Try them with a banana first and they will wean themselves off the breast naturally?

sort of LOL
there is a test that personally I think all babies should be able to do whether TW or BLW which is if they can pick up, chew and swallow a piece of ripe banana they are ready for solids. Obviously its very important they can do this for BLW. Its important that milk remains the main intake for babies under 12 months old, whether thats breastmilk or formula.

I did a bit of a combo of some puree foods and some finger foods and his good with both really and it can be quite fun! I didn't wanna make up huge batches of stuff for him to not like so at first i used ellas kitchen pouches to discover what tastes he likes (seems to be sweetish stuff like sweet potato and butternut squash!) i started with small spoonfuls of that and later in the day would cut up some bread or brocili and stick it on his highchair table and let him get messy! Think the combo of the two is good as his getting a taste of foods he loves and his discovering how to eat to :) x

I was dreading weaning too, bf was just so simple and I knew what I was doing, solids seemed like a minefield! We do BLW as well though and it's fine, just a case of being more organised than before but it's great fun too :D

BLW has been great for us. We eat a lot better as a family now too - no more frozen pizzas! Because I just put the food in front of her and let her get on with it, it really isn't tricky. Also, it means I can actually eat a meal while sitting at a table using both hands. Bliss!

Oh I can't wait!! we're going down the BLW path and I'm really excited about it.,
MrsQ I reccomend getting thr BLW book by Gill Rapsley. Its an interesting read and explains the whole theory behind it all.

BLW was a really really positive experience for us and one we'll definitely be doing again this time round!

Thank you for your replies girls :)

I did the puree weaning with my first and it was a nightmare. Thats why I really want to try BLW with baby wombat:)

We BLW DD2 who was exclusively breastfed for 7 months, we did try her on purees but she wouldn't take them and it worked out really well for her to do BLW. I plan on doing the same with Ella

Hate the mess of pureed stuff more than anything :p

I'm dreading weaning but mainly because when I start to wean her it will be around the same time that I have to go back to work and am already stressing about how to continue breastfeeding properly, how she'll cope with the change of me being at work and then weaning on top of all that.

I am not dreading it exactly, but the thought of it is making me really appreciate the last few weeks of exclusive BF...

Hadn't really thought of BLW, just going to start with baby rice and purees at 6 months and see how we get on.
