Hi i just thought I would start this thread to see if anyone else is experiencing worry as their pregnancy continues that they might get pre eclampsia again!!! I got it right near the end of my last pregnancy and it got so bad i was in intensive care for 2 weeks.
It was a frightening ordeal and i can say im already a little worried as to whether it will strike again. anyone else understand my fears xx

i havent had it before but im scared ill get it for a firt time? wot are the sypmtpoms and wot causes it? x

hi emzlouize the symptons of pre eclampsia are: headaches, blurry vision or spots in front of your eyes, flashing lights, high bp ( would normally be for example 110/90 or higher on a few occasions) protein in urine, sudden swelling of hands, face or feet. these are the main signs to look out for and if you do get any signs it wouldnt normally be until 2nd or 3rd trimester. no one is really sure what causes pre eclampsia yet but it is where the placenta de tatches itself from the baby bcos your body starts to reject the baby, you can be more likely to get it in first pregnancies and i also have the same chance of getting it in this pregnancy as i am with a different partner now. every pregnant woman should be made aware of this at the start of pregnancy as when i got it i had no idea what it was and went through a pretty horriffic time to say the least!!!! but now i am wary of the symptons i feel much more relieved. hope this helped. xxx

Hi Chel,
I had pre-eclampsia with my first pregnancy: it wasn't as bad as yours, but I was hospitalised for the last 2 weeks of my pregnancy and it resulted in me having a c section in week 38 (that, and baby was breech). I've heard it's more common in first pregnancies. They're likely to keep a special eye on you, just in case. During my second pg, I had one little bp flare up at 35 weeks and they rushed me into monitor baby and it all calmed down very quickly and there was no more problems and I delivered naturally just after term.
So, the likelyhood is that you should be OK this time round, but obviously make sure you attend all your antenatal appts and keep getting that bp and urine checked!!
HTH xxxx

Hi claire-eedie
thanks for your reply yes i am at ease a bit as the speciaist at hospital wants me to see the midwife every week until im 24 weeks then twice a week to have my urine and bp checked, plus i am also having 3 extra growth scans, i suppose with all that care i should really not worry but its still in my mind.
so by the sounds of your pregnancy it seems although things might be ok. i had a c section to cos i was induced but it didnt do anything. xx

my mum had it with me and my sister, does that mean im likely to get it aswell? she didnt have it extremely bad though.

it means that yes hun you could be likely to get it as it can run in families and it can be due to a faulty gene. just be observant of the signs and i would mention that to your midwife as well as your bp and should be kept an eye on. xx

i am but last time i wasnt too bad with it they just kept me in and kept an eye on my blood pressure but i'm pretty shocked that this time round i havent had my blood pressure taken since my booking appointment!! But yes i am a bit concerned about getting it again

i mentioned it at when i was 9 weeks pregnant and she still classed me a low risk. weird

i would be pretty insistent on having my bp checked quite frequent, i dont think you can ever be over cautious with pre eclampsia. when i got it in my first pregnancy the midwife i had dismissed my high blood pressure and protein in urine and that nearly cost me my life. xx

bloodyhell, only jst read ur reply now but last night in bed when i switched the light off i had flashing white lights when i closed my eyes i had it about 3 times i had to keep opening then and look round my room, this is probs nothing to do with it but im scared now! xx

dont be scared hun but DO see your midwife and get your bp and urine checked, i think its always better to be over cautious!!! im sure all is ok though xx

well i would then insist on a lil extra care bcos it can rum in families and its more common in 1st pregnancies to, so do just keep an eye out and ask your mw to keep more of an eye on you and any signs of it developing xx

yeah sure wull do. My nan and mum suffer from hi blood pressure too, i however dont (yet!!!) lol.

My mum never made a big deal about her pre-E so i assume it wasnt that bad. she got it right at the end aswell. x

some people dont get it that bad hun your right so maybe your mum didnt have it that bad, I however was in intensive care for 2 weeks and my kidneys had stopped working and all the fluid that was being put into me was being retained in my body!!! my highest blood pressure was 125/126. i had a line going into my heart to check that the fluid wouldnt reach my lungs or brain......and it goes on....so that is what pre eclampsia can turn into which at the stage i had it its then called eclampsia xx
