Hi ladies. Today I went and did a follow up of my anatomy scan. I had it initially a week ago and everything looked great except they couldn't see a second kidney so I was told to come back for a re-scan in a week.

We went today and our little DD definitely only has one kidney. The doctor didn't seem too concerned as most people with one kidney lead perfectly normal and healthy lives. I feel okay but a little shocked.

I'm very grateful that it's not something worse but has anyone's LOs had this? Just wondering if anyone else knows much about it? I guess it's just something that happens sometimes.

TIA ladies x

Hi hun
I had to answer my best friends little one is 6 now and she found out at the anomaly scan at 20 weeks little one only had one kidney.
Her little girl is fine always has been no problems she manages just perfectly with one the only problem she has is if she gets a sickness bug she tends to get a water infection but apparently that's a common problem with one kidney when your ill so soon as she is her mum gets as much fluid into her as possible

Honestly she's fine :)
Your little lady will also be fine :) beautiful pic hun

Hope I've helped my friend was so shocked she kept saying she's got a bit missing but the Drs weren't worried and little one you would never know had anything wrong :)

I used to babysit for a little guy with one kidney (20 yearsago (gulp)) - it never caused him any problems. His Mum told me at the time the only reason it was a concern was if anything went wrong with the one he had, there was no back up... but the chances of that were so slight they never gave it another thought xx

Thanks so much Emma that makes me feel a bit better. It's a little nerve wracking. I'm so glad to hear your friend's daughter is doing well though. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out when she gets sick though :) thanks x

Thanks Rickles. I hope the other kidney is great and hopefully all will be fine!

I was born with 2 kidneys but at the age of 8 they realised that one of them had stopped working, they don't even know when it stopped or why. But I haven't had any problems since, although like someone said, I am slightly more prone to UTIs than the average woman. The only one issue I can imagine your daughter facing is that when she decided to give you grandkiddies she would probably be seen as higher risk.

Hi hun. Please don't worry too much, it is a fairly common occurrence. I know it's hard not to worry!

My brother was born with one kidney and he is now 22 years old and has never had any issues because of it. The one kidney he doesn't have is larger than average which i assume is normal for people with one kidney as it is working for two. Honestly, he is absolutely fine. He has done all the things teenagers do drinking, smoking etc and still has no issues. Hope that puts your mind at ease a bit x

That is supposed to say the kidney he DOES have! Sorry auto correct x

Thanks heaps ladies. I saw my midwife today and she has booked me in next week with a doctor just to make sure everything is okay and to answer any questions I might have. Hopefully the other kidney is working great and I won't have to worry!
