Anyone get pregnant after myomectomy?

Hello,

I was recently diagnosed with submucosal fibroids(largest 3.3cm) and my RE feels that this is impeding my ability to get pregnant. We have been trying for 6 months now with no BFPs. I am 38 and DH is 37. He said that I could get pregnant with these particular type of fibroids but that a) it would be harder to get pregnant and b) I would have a higher rate of miscarriage. Apparently, they protrude into the cavity and distort the shape of the uterus making implantation more difficult.

He recommended a myomectomy via hysteroscopy(thru vagina) and laparoscopy. I know lots of women who have gotten pregnant with fibroids, some have had miscarriages and some did ok. Is there anyone out there who got pregnant ONLY after getting the myomectomy to remove these particular type of fibroids? I know that the intramural(within the wall) and subserosal(outside of the uterus) pose no real problems but I guess mine are a bit more rare and are known to be an issue.

I had a huge submucosal fibroid (7 cm diameter and weighing almost 2 kgs). We didn't even try to get prenant because my doc said we'd have no success at all and it would be a huge health risk (ruptured uterus, etc.) The fibroid also grew through one of my fallopian tubes and ruptured it. I had a myomectomy done, but not a hysteroscopy; they actually cut me open and removed it, sort of like a c-section. I also had to have microscopic surgery done on my left fallopian tube to repair the damage. I had an hsg 6 months later to confirm everything was okay, and it was. If I were you, I'd have the procedure done, just to eliminate the risk. It may set you back a bit, but unless your doc can confirm your fibroid won't interfere with your pregnancy, it's better to be safe than sorry. Keep in mind also, though, that any surgery like presents risks as well. Hope this helps, and gl to you!

Thanks for sharing your story with me! Looks like it worked for you. I agree with you and am going for it. I would feel terrible if I somehow did manage to get pregnant but then lost it b/c of the stupid fibroids. You have given me hope that it can work out! I am on the old side(38) so this is going to delay the TTC process by 3 or 4 more months but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. May you have a happy and healthy nine months!

Just thought I would join in and let you all know that I have actually got surgery booked for the 30th of january to remove my Submucosal fibroid and they are doing this via myomectomy via hysteroscopy(thru vagina) and then they said if they struggle to remove it this way then they may have to do it via laparoscopy whilst i'm still under.

I am really nervous as I am nervous and I hope it helps me to conceive as I am 25 and my boyfriend and I have been ttc for 3 years now. Fingers crossed, wish me luck. xxx

Hiya

I had a myomectomy in May 2006, I had a really big fibroid, the size of 2 babies heads!! I had an implant in my stomach called Zolodex to try and reduce the size and blood flow to the fibroids.
I had an up down cut too, so went from my tummy button to my bikini line.
I was told that I would not be able to give birth naturally an would need a section.

I have had 2 mc's this year andfingers crossed this pg will be ok. I am 41 years old now, so fertility hasnt been a problem

Buttonsbabe86 - I too am scheduled for a hysteroscopy/laparascopy removal of 3 submucosal fibroids on January 18th. I am scared but trying to stay positive. I hope everything goes ok with the procedure. They say I can start trying again after 2 months if all goes well. I will keep you posted. Just so you know a hysteroscopy is much less invasive than a laparscopy so if that is all you need that you would be great! It is basically like doing a D&C so you should up and around the next day. Good luck to you!

Thanks for sharing your story. Do you know what kind of fibroids you had?(i.e intramural, subserosal or submucosal) Also were you able to get pregnant before you had your fibroids removed? I am wishing you a healthy pregnancy!!

Thanks for that gettinginfo, you really think I will be up and around the next day as the doctor said she will sign me off for a week after the surgery and that I have to stay overnight?

Hi Buttonsbabe86,

I see you are in the UK. I am in the US and a hysteroscopy is an outpatient procedure. I am not sure if the protocol is different there, maybe? If they convert to a laparoscopy then this is still considered an outpatient procedure here(no overnight stay) but the recovery time is 1-2weeks b/c in that instance they are making incisions over your abdomen so you will be sore and need more healing time.

It is considered a day surgery here however for some reason they consider me to be extremely obese and said they have to keep me in overnight to keep an eye on me as it will be more dangerous for me because i'm supposedly so overweight! I am absolutely livid I am only size 12, your size 10 in the US (I think) I would hardly say I was morbidly obese as they make out. But because this is what they're claiming they say I have to stay in overnight as I pose as high risk! But normally it is only day surgery over here

I do not consider size 12 "extremely obese" so fret not. I guess they are just trying to do the safest thing(even if it was without tact!). Hang in there and keep me posted!

If I remember they were in the muscle wall, I had a massive one and lots of smaller ones. My consultant said my womb was like swiss cheese after the operation. I was in hospital for 2 weeks and my recovery was approx 6 months, but was not TTC for a few years after my op. I had regular scans for about 2 years after to keep an eye on new ones growing, which they did slowly on the back wall and I was told they were starting to morph in to one.
I dont know if they will affect this pregnancy - I had a big bright red bleed 4 days ago and thought it was all over again, but had a scan all was ok

Hi!

I'm glad to share that we got pregnant 7 months after abdominal myomectomy to remove 3 mid-sized fibroids. Our OBGYN initially estimated that we should TTC naturally for the first 6months after the surgery, and we had planned for an IVF on 7th month..we want to skip IUI altogether, given that my right tube is blocked.

But we found out that we got that month, without IVF!
Yes, it can happen.. sometimes it does take time for your body to adjust itself after the surgery.. we started only after 3months after the surgery.. I can't stand the cramps
