I have been in agony since friday. I think it is an abcess under my crown at the back. The pain has now spread right round the jaw to my ears and my chin. My necks glands are swollen too.

I have used all the gels going, clove oil, ice packs, cocodamol, corsodyl, etc but nowt is working. I was started on 500mg amoxicillin tds. The out of hours dentist said she would do nothing as i am pregnant.

I called my MW today who consulted with the consultant. They would be perfectly happy for me to have the tooth out. Rather that than get a major systemic posioning. Which i really fear as i have nursed people who have had scepticeamia after not sorting out a tooth abcess.

I am in agony all the time. I cant sleep and i woke at 1am this morning. Had a cup of tea then got sweaty and passed out. The pain is making me so tired and feel ill.

I have an appointment with my nhs dentist this morning. If she doesnt take it out i am afraid i will either rip it out myself or go private. As crude as it is i know they will take it out for the money as i have alreday had some quotes after telling them i am pregnant.

I know some people that have had dental work whilst pregnant.

Anyone else?

I know the local anaesthetic they use does not pass to the placenta. The dentist yesterday said they dont like to traumatise the body by extracting a tooth but i am traumatised more right now.

:nope:

Right.

I have now been to my dentist, spoken to a colleague at work who is a professor of anaesthetics, spoken to my mw, spoken to my obstetrician and bypassed my silly gp.

My tooth will come out on wednesday-thank goodness for light at the end of the tunnel.

Ibuprofen and cocodamol are safe and neccessary for me at this point. Ibuprofen should not be taken after 31 weeks due to the low risk of abnormally closing the arterioductus before birth.

The dentist who knows i am a keen nurse has given me loads of papers on meds, surgery, etc to take away with.

The less invasive the better when it comes to dental work-many things can be put off until after the birth-but if you have a raging infection you are putting yourself and unborn baby at risk by not getting it sorted. Antibiotics may help (not me though!) but it will only subside the infection-it wont get rid of it.

Xrays on your jaw are fine in pregnancy. One dental xray is the equivalent to the radiation you might get whilst flying from london to spain and back. And the radiation is to your face and not your baby.

Anyway, i hope this helps someone some day:thumbup:

I was going to say I had a filling done last monday. I was actually lectured about waiting b/c if it got infected, then it could spread. Glad you are getting it out.

I suffer from a fear of dentists and gum disease, not a godd combination. I literally have to be sedated to have a check up or a cleaning. Was referred to a specialist (periodontist) just before I found out I was pregnant so cancelled once I knew as I wouldnt let them work on me without extreme sedation.
Then at 16 weeks I got an infection at the back around a top molar. I was in such pain I was actually depressed. Finally after days of this I gave in and went to a private dentist thinking nothing could be worse than this pain. I was taking paracetamol but they only took the esdge off for an hour or 2. So I went in to a new dentist (too embarrassed to go to my old ones as I had skipped appointments through the last 18 months) thinking I would be numbed and cleaned. Nope, tooth came out. And you know what ? For all my crying and shaking... I survived!!
Feeling more confident I went to see the periodontist and we came up with a treatment plan for after birth, 3 more teeth out (all at back) and intensive deep cleaning, will be getting IV sedation. However in the meantime, at about 20 weeks, I felt the start of another infection around two of the teeth that were due out, went back to my new dentist, DIDNT CRY, and had them out!! Was very proud of myself!! Baby fine, Im fine and not in distress.
My point is, go and get it seen to, like you say its better to have any infection gone and not to be stressed and in pain.
AND my 3 extractions and consultation have cost me almost €500, and the work Im having done in July is nearly €1,000:dohh: So please look after yours!

Sorry about length of this, just wanted to share. It really was a huge accomplishment for me to be able to go to dentist without being gassed etc:happydance:

I had an impacted wisdom tooth while pregnant with my second son. It was horrible! I got it extracted but could only receive lidocaine as novacaine was too strong for the baby. I could only take tylenol for the pain afterward. Dentist work while pregnant sure does suck!

Well done you! I am not phobic but even i feel nauseous every time i go!

I had some dental work done too, at 33 weeks. The only thing they were being overly paranoid about was the fact I was lying flat on my back whilst they did the work. Maybe bring a pillow you can put behind half your back, to make you lean slightly and not press in on the vena cava?

But otherwise, I was over it fairly quickly.

I had to have work done. At 11 weeks I had a horrific toothache. My back molar was just starting to abcess, they drilled and cleaned it and stuck temp dressing in. My own dentist wouldn't do anything else as I had had that tooth filled twice before (tooth was broken due to an accident) and said I needed X-ray and ? Root canal so they said they would wait til baby born. At 13 weeks filling fell out - not sore but went to dentist to have it replaced again she said we would just keep an eye on it. Two days later I woke up in agony - Saturday morning - so called NHS 24 and was sent to dental hospital. Lovely dentist there said she could clean it again or she could pull it out. As I already said it was a back tooth so I can't see it and was relieved to say get rid of it! Had it removed with local anaesthetic and it took 5 mins of pushing and it popped out! It was sore for rest of day but after that fine! So glad to have it out and like OP it was best result despite people being reluctant to touch me as I was pregnant. Also so many horror stories on Internet don't help :)

Sound slike you had the run around that i have had. So annoying that professionals cant all be up to date with the research and guidelines!

I was up at 1am and 3am then since 5 this morning. I rang and asked if they could move it to today otherwise i think i'l be pulling it out myself:haha: Agonising!

I have had a horrible toothache since last week. Finally got to the dentist yesterday and I have an abscess. They are doing a root canal today. I also have pretty bad gum disease too, which didn't really surprise me because my gums are always pretty crappy!

I would have preferred not to need extensive dental work while pregnant, but I think it would be much worse if I waited. And they are holding off on some of my treatment till baby is born.

I will be getting dental work done, my teeth are a mess :haha:

It's rubbish isn't it that no one seems to agree on managing pregnant women!

How did you get on today - did they take it out?
