Hi Girls, had my consultant appointment today and discussed the possibility of having to have a cerclage at around 16-20 weeks if a scan shows my cervix is narrow. Now, the doctor did say that they try to do a normal abdominal u.s first but if it doesn't show clearly enough then would have to do internal...my question though is IF my cervix is weak how is prodding it with a scanning probe going to be beneficial??!!

I had to have an internal today which wasn't expected and I cacked myself because it just doesn't seem right poking about if the neck of my womb isn't very strong.

I know they obviously know what they are doing but just wondered if anyone else had to go through this?? and what risks there are to both the internal examination AND the procedure itself?

Really frightened at the thought of being put to sleep also:wacko:

Thanks for reading:flower:x Any input would be most appreciated.

Hi. I just wanted you to know that I do these scans everyday - and lots of ladies come on a regular basis for internal scans because of their cervix. The scan is completely safe, as the probe only goes into the vagina and no further. We wouldnt go furtling around in their if it wasnt safe! :nope:
Its also good they are keeping their eye on it. :hugs:

Thank you! that was pretty reassuring, and yes I am rather pleased with the care I am receiving for this pregnancy, I am just a bit of a worrier. x

I've had 3 internal scans so far and have another in a couple of weeks. I have been totally reassured that it won't cause any problems and when you look at the pictures on the screen you can see the distance from your cervix to the end of the probe.

There is a post in this section called Incompetent Cervix and you might find it helpful to read about other people's experiences of stitches etc on there xx

Hey hon,

I've had numerous t/v scans throughout both of my pregnancies and they've been absolutely fine.

I've also had 3 cerclages and I wasn't put to sleep with any of them. It was done with a spinal block (the same as if you were having a c-section). I've found the spintal blocks absolutely fine.

Any questions at all please ask.
xx

Now I have a question (sorry to jump in here). I am having a cerclage placed on June 8. I know I am having an epidural, but I was wondering if they give you anything else to sort of sedate you so you aren't so aware of what they are doing, and I am wondering how long the surgery takes.

Hey honey,

I'm not sure what kind of cerclage you are having. I would guess a vaginal cerclage of some kind. When I had my vaginal cerclage, I was ok with just the spinal. It just felt like lots of pushing and pulling (not painful at all). The anaethetist was fab and just kept me chatting the whole time. It was over in about 20-30 mins and went really quickly. It really wasn't that bad.

When I had my abdominal one, I couldn't get the idea out of my head that they would be making an incision (it is put through your tummy like a c-section scar). So a little way in to the op, they gave me a sedative to relax me. I had this one done pre-pregnancy, so I'm not sure if they can give you anything like this if you are pregnant.

Do you get to meet the anaethetist before your op, perhaps you could ask if you have any options?

I also had an an occlusion suture under spinal while pregnant and that was absolutely fine too with just the spinal.

It is scary at first (I'm always scared of the unknown) but honestly not that bad at all. Although I'm nervous about my c-section, I'm not worried about the spinal block part of it at all.

I'm actually looking forward to the part where your bum goes numb and it feels warm and fuzzy - I am such a weirdo. I quite like that part!!

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

xx

Sorry to be useless but I don't actually know the answers to your questions:dohh: the consultant seemed to want me to just wait until after the (possible) tv scan this thursday before I bombarded him with questions, but as one of the other ladies has said, it takes about 20 mins??
I have however been told if i have it done it would be under general which I don't like to think of one bit as I wont know how safe baby is until awake which is freaky!!
Best of luck for your procedure hun x

Bec-thankyou for telling me about that other thread I will look on there.

Am glad the probe doesn't go to high and thank you all for the positivity:flower:

....not so sure I would ENJOY an epidural though hahaha!:haha:
I do like blood tests though, so maybe I AM a little weird...! x x x

Jadey, you are so brave having c section (I'm sure you probably don't have a choice but still!) I have no idea why people (especially men) are under the illusion that c-section is the easy option as I knew someone that had one and said the recovery time was lengthy and she couldn't do certain things for a little while. Sorry to be negative, but just wanted to shout out for those having c-sections and aknowledge that they aren't wusses!!! x

Thanks hon, I would much rather have a natural birth. Having said that the MILD (in the ob's words, not mine :haha:) braxton hicks I've been having the last couple of days are a bit ouchy!!

I'm not saying that a natural birth is easier than a c-section, I would just love to be able to look after my little one immediately after birth as opposed to be tied to my bed with a catheter. Ah well definitely can't complain.

Ah if you like blood tests - a spinal will be a doddle :winkwink:

I'm surprised that it is being done under GA - where are you based? You could maybe request a spinal block if you'd prefer?

xx

i currently have a vag. cerclage and have t.v scans all the time, the sonagrapher @ my docs is really good and keeps the probe in the vagina far away from the cervix, so in my experience t.v ultrasounds are safe

AHH:wacko:catheters-something else that scares the crap out of me!
I actually found my contractions more painful than pushing! So I really feel for you hun:hugs:
Glad you seem to sound ok with it all. x:flower:

Agiboma, thank you for informing me that they don't go to close as that was my initial concern that it might cause more problems but if it's in bubs best interest, I will do whatever they ask...just nice to know ahead how it all works!!:flower:

....sorry Jadey, I am in East of England and consultant just said if I have to have it, it will be under general but I didn't ask him if there was another alternative but not sure which I would struggle with most-I don't like the idea of being put under and trusting that baby is ok until I wake OR having a syringe put in my spine!! hmmmm, I will keep thinking!!!x
