Anyone here a doctor? Feel like i have been given duff advice by our GP

My LO has had this when younger and HV said to water down (only by half) the formula just for 24 hours, which I did and LO was ok. He now has Gastroenteritis, I have been told to feed as normal but to water down milk to help with the sickness. I know this is no help but just wanted to share what I have been told and what I am doing.

Hope your LO is better soon xxx

Aw - thanks for putting this on, hurrah for mummy instincts! And don't feel bad - we all do what we feel is best with the info we have been given xxx

Oh don't feel bad! You won't have done any harm :hugs:

Hi my LO is 7 months and has also been having diarrhea for a few days now, i took her to the docs today and she advised me to give LO dioralyte instead of her milk feeds. But reading this thread it seems a lot of you dont agree with this? It's all so confusing when the doc tells you 1 thing, the dioralyte leaflet tells you another and searching the internet tells you something completely different lol :dohh:

Please ignore your GP and listen to the GP who has already commented on this thread. Im a nurse, not paediatrics though but we would never starve somebody who had diarrhoea, thats very old school practice. My best suggestion is to feed LO on demand, LO may ask for more feeds due to losing so much fluid through diarrhoea but feed as much as LO wants to prevent dehydration. Dont dilute the formula. Give the medications as prescribed. Hope that helps somewhat. If anything changes over the weekend I would contact NHS direct.

Thanks, i gave LO a bottle of milk before bed as she was crying as she was hungry and didnt feel right to not feed her! She did have more diarrhea afterwards but only the once. x

If its a bug it will be working its way out of her. If it was an allergy there would be other signs and a few diluted bottles wont have hurt!

I have no advice and didnt want to ready and run, just wanted to offer sprinklings of get-well dust for your little man xx

WanaBaba, what does the dioryte leaflet say?

It says to give One sachet Daily x

Sorry, I meant did it advise about replacing feeds with it or diluting feeds?

As far as diarrhoea goes, my mantra is better out than in. It's mostly causes by viruses and it's the body's way of trying to get rid of the bug (as well as building up antibodies to it). As long as bubs is well hydrated, it's ok.

my sister LO had server tummy bugss and kept catching them (has two older siblings so they kinda passed the bug back an forth for a little while)baby ended up going to hospital due to refusing all feeds and high temperature, but as for the diahorea (spelling) she was advised to feed on demand and offer sterile water to keep baby hydrated. personally id feed on demand keep little record of how many ounces he has and how often he's pooping/peeing if he still has a tummy bug in 2days or shows other symptoms then id take him back to the drs xx

Anyone know how long you leave it before you have to go back to docs, LO starting being poorly on Thursday, still had the runs all day today? xx

It depends tired gal on how bubs is in themselves. Diarrhoea is normally self-limiting and can take 24 hours to 7 days to resolve. If LO is peeing plenty and drinking plenty and is ok in themselves then there's little the Doc can do. Is your LO on dioralyte? What could be useful is getting a stool sample tested. Most diarrhoea episodes are caused by viruses for which there is no treatment but if ita caused by a bacteria then it can be treated by antibiotics but like I said most cases are viral :hugs:

Thanks hun, he is a lot better in himself, seems to have stopped being sick too, just still has the runs and still off his food but taking his formula little and often. We have been given dioralyte just in case he got any worse over the weekend but we haven't given it him because he is drinking lots of water as well as having his formula xxx
