I have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and have about ten days until I see the diabetes nurse.

Was just wondering if anyone knew a good website which had examples of meals I can eat? Most of them seem a bit confusing, saying how many grams of this and that to have. Just want to make a start on a better diet before I see the nurse.
 
There is one I want to share with you but because I am new, I am not allowed to. I can't even say the name of it because this site is still telling me off for trying to share it with you.

The grams of this and that is a pain in the rear side! The grams guide is set out for those that tend to give themselves huge portions. I don't know what your situation is, but if you do eat more than you know you should, gradually reduce your portion sizes until you get to their guided amount because if you went from what you're used to, to something tiny, they you may get cheesed off with it all.

Changing your diet is the usual, eat more fibre, fruit & veg and cut out foodstuffs that contain sugar and/or fats. Otherwise baby will take the sugar away from you and make you crave some more!

If you are able to fit any excercise in, that'd be grand. I'm not talking about 30mins at the gym 3 times a week sort of thing! Some gentle swimming, a walk etc Check to see if there is an excercise class available in your area designed especially or pregnant mums! The excercise will help you build up your strength which is always a good thing!

I don't have gestational diabetes, I was diagnosed as type 2 a few years ago, but I can't see any reason why the dietry requirements would be that much different. I just saw my diabetic nurse on Thursday and although it's something I am already used to she gave me some advice anyway.

I was told to eat lean protein, as many veggies as I can handle and half portions of starch/carbs.

Some simple tips would be switching to wholewheat bread and pasta, and avoid the obvious things like chocolate, sugary drinks, and sweets. Don't have much fruit or fruit juice as even though the sugar in them is natural and not refined, it still makes your blood sugars go up.

I was told that during pregnancy it's important to be sensible rather than counting grams or calories and that just basic healthy eating was enough.
