Summer rain ! Some people on here have said you may be about and may reply as you are very knowledgable ! I take it you have read my posts. I have got to the stage where Im so confused ( and upset ) and just dont know what to do for the best.....can you advise me on what I should do ?

xx

Thanks hun for the compliment. I think the other ladies replied really well so thats why I didn't reply before; but for a couple of weeks soya is probably not going to do any harm; but as a longer term thing it probably isn't a good idea. Also what is the plan of the doctors and so on if the soya formula does agree with summer; will they try to fob you off and put her on it long term? As the other ladies have said many babies who do have an allergy to cows milk will either have an existing soya allergy or develop one; I have read anything from 53% to 80+% depending on which studies you look at. Also there is a link to soya formula consumption in the first few months and an increased risk of peanut allergy-this is because peanuts are actually beans and very closely related to soya. Personally I would ask for an alternative, but as I said no real harm probably if it is just a brief trial xx

if it helps! i recently had issues with my LO (we were trying to find a formula in the UK she can use - she was on a different one in South Africa that they dont sell here) and we discovered it was omega 3 and 6 that was causing the issues. whether it came from plants or fish.
the only formula we could find in boots that didnt have omega 3 and 6 was the SMA lactose free (LO doesnt have lactose intolerance since the formula she was on before contained lactose and she was fine on it) and it made a MASSIVE difference.

i know its rare to have an allergy/intolerance to the omegas, but it could be possible!
just...as another option in case the 1 you're trying now doesnt work.

good luck :)

Lactose-free isn't recommended for babies unless they have an intolerance to it as lactose is quite important for brain development. Even SMA made lactose free specifically for babies with lactose intolerance, either inborn, or temporary due to an illness-it isn't recommended for general use.

The holle organic formula brand contains NO omega 3 or 6 or any other additional fatty acids/fish oils, but has lactose and only costs about £1 more for the same size package as the SMA LF if you're worried about cost xx

oh really? I had no idea, thanks. The one issue I have is well...how easy it is to get hold of. I know SMA is available easily in a boots etc, but I have no idea where I can get the Holle one. I've looked it up, and I've looked in shops etc, so that's why I went for the SMA LF

Is there anything like...lactose drops I can add to her bottle? (I'll look it up myself! I just thought I'd ask you first :flower:) or any simple way to get the Holle?

Hey hun

Well as far as I can remember, he said to try the soya for 2 weeks to give her tummy a rest as she has had lots of diarreah it would have stripped her lining so this would be the most gentle formula for it. Once her poos are back to ' normal ' then he suggested going back to comfort which will hopefully confirm if it is the milk that is disagreeing with her. My husband is adament it is the bug that has made her have this diareah but I still have suspicions it may be the milk
so guess its the waiting game....come on normal poos !

You can buy colief which breaks down the lactose in the milk, making it easier to digest. Many people recommend it, and you can also get it on prescription if you find it works. It's expensive though - around £10 for a small bottle. It's worth trying it with regular formula and seeing if it makes a difference.

She said the problem was the fish oils; not the lactose so breaking down the lactose in normal formula wouldn't solve the problem. The Holle is sold online; there is also babynat but thats a bit more expensive. Let me find a couple of links for you

and babynat

bear in mind the babynat tin is more than twice the size of the holle box; but it still works out slightly more pricey per 100g. I know the babynat brand is very popular in Malaysia and other countries in the far east and both Holle and babynat are very popular in mainland Europe. xx

I think issues with the fish oils and the alternatives are quite common, but the formula companies make out they are some essential element of formula when they are not, really its just a way for them to put prices up, after all the government in the UK only officially reluctantly allowed these ingredients in formula in 2007 (despite some companies just putting them in before this anyway) so they can't have been very convinced of them being essential for growth and development. When my eldest was little only Aptamil and SMA had them (SMAs always being algae based), they both really aggravated his reflux and posetting, in those days HIPP and Cow and Gate did not have these ingredients in and he was mostly fine with those when he got a bit older. Sadly though all the mainstream formula companies have decided to add them now, leaving only expensive organic imported formulas if parents want an alternative. xx
