I've posted this in all 3 tris as desperate to hear from someone else that has scoliosis and find out if you are having a cesarean or natural birth?

With my DD my husband wanted me to have a cesarean as we weren't sure how tilted / twisted my pelvis is (I have a 35 degree curve at bottom of my spine and a 15 degree one at top so spine is S shaped)
I wasn't overly keen on the idea but ended up hospitalised with severe pre eclampsia at 37 weeks and decision was taken out of my hands when they decided baby had to come out at 38 weeks and she wasn't head down.

They hadn't realised how bad my curves were and it resulted in them not being able to physically administer a spinal as they just couldn't get it in correctly so I ended up having to be put to sleep :(

I really don't want this to happen again and hated the cesarean recovery time but OH is still terrified of baby getting stuck so was just wondering if anyone else can please share their experiences with me as my MW and docs aren't overly familiar with the condition. Thanks :)

Hi! I have scoliosis and my spine is S shaped too but I don't know the degree. It is quite pronounced and my ribcage and pelvis are also affected. I had two children so far both born naturally. I had epidural with my first and I don't think my doctor had a problem of putting it up. However I did not like the recovery and labor process being taken out of my hands and had a second one just with tense machine.
I think it is very important to find MW and a doctor who already had experience with patience like you. We tend to believe medical personal just because they spent time getting their degree but I know from my own life experience that the degree without a very specific experience is nothing. I have a few other illnesses that many people even haven't heard about and last time I spent almost 2 years convincing a doctor that my initial guessed diagnosis was right. However as he did not have other cases like mine ( but otherwise very experienced doctor, who also teaches at uni) and I was put on a monthly course of a very strong drug that actually did nothing to help but caused me a temporary loss of vision.
To making long story short I would suggest google and find specialists who look after people with scoliosis and talk to them about how to handle your birth. Other mums here just like me may not have the same degree of scoliosis as you do. Good luck and hope you can have a relaxing natural birth.

Thanks for replying, nice to know that it can be done!
My curves are not severe enough to warrant surgery but I did have to wear a back brave throughout my teenage years so it was quite bad.
Where are you based?
I'm in the UK and its not that heard of here :(

My curve was caught very early, I wore a brace when I was 10 for 3 years and it stopped it getting worse. You can tell still, my right hip and ribs stick out more than the left. So although I have scoliosis I assume it won't affect delivery...

I've research though, being the worrier that I am... and heard it shouldn't be a problem unless it's a particularly bad case, though.

I also have scoliosis with a minor S curvature. Had 2 normal, natural deliveries. I can't vouch for the spinal as mine were unmedicated. I did end up with 2 posterior babies (back labour!) and its been thought to be due to my twisted and tilted pelvis.
