Since my last post Leo has been back to the doctors as I felt the gaviscon was no longer working after 4 days on it. Initially he was like a different baby but then he started being sick again and was constipated. I stopped it after 10 days and after a particularly hard day of him crying/screaming and being unsettled I took him back to see the doc. He was particularly useless and decided that Leo now had trapped wind caused by the gaviscon and recommended we stop the gaviscon and try him on colief for the wind. Initially it seemed to be working and the sickness stopped for a few days, but he started having really runny green poo's twice or 3 times a day and slowly the screaming/arching and possiting started again. Tuesday last week he was bad, screamed after every burp and then threw up
and then continued to scream and arch, I rang the docs again and was determined they werent going to fob me off again. It was the same doc I saw the last time I was there and he got me in to see a paediatrician (sp?) that very day. WE saw a pead who agreed there was a problem and it could well be reflux but she was very adamant about strating at the beginning. She has told me to limit his feed from 5/6 oz every 3/4 hours to 4 oz every 3 hours and to go back in 2 weeks for a
review. At first I wasnt happy that they were sending me home with nothing to watch my baby scream in pain some more.....but hubby backed her up and agreed we needed to start a scratch with him as all we have done since he was born is change his milk/add gaviscon/coleif etc.. so I had to back down. I have now started to take more notice of his patterns so I am armed with more info when I go back to see her and have noticed that he doesnt suffer every day, its every other a general rule and only during the day, never during the night. In the night he usually feeds and goes back off, he'll typically start around 6 am feed and give up somewhere between 8 and 10 pm. He doesnt projectile vomit, sometimes he will scream as soon as his bottle is finished whilst I am trying to wind him or he will scream after he's been burped. Throws himself backwards and goes
completely rigid and red faced, tears too! He isnt sick an awful lot and this
varies from lots of sick straight after a feed or bringing up small amounts upto an hour after a feed. He doesnt sleep very much on the bad days and will really try to go off, manage 10/20 mins and wake up crying, pulling legs up. His poo's have remained very dark green and sloppy and bad smelling!!! (sorry for TMI) BUT ARE NOW EVERY 2 DAYS-ISH. He also seems to be very gassy, doing smelly farts etc and little burps throughout the day, I suppose what I need to ask is does this sound like reflux? Is it normal to have good days where no sick, no crying, lots of sleep etc and the next day complete mayhem? He seems to be putting on weight very well so this isnt a problem either. I just know when he's in pain hes hurting and so do i :(
I am finding I am feeling more and more stressed out with him now when he cries all day and am going to see my doc for my own good.
The registrar I saw last week mentioned about maybe putting him on either a milk thickener or sma stay down? Does anyone have any experience of these? Is there anything else I should maybe ask for instead?
Could this not be reflux and be something completely different?

I will tell you my story and see which parts you can pick out. Archie's had reflux for 10 weeks now and has been on gaviscone for it. Last week he started to get bad wind and seamed to be suffering from poss colic. So we stopped the gaviscone and he seamed to be better then a few days later his reflux came back so we put him back on the gaviscone. What we have done today is switch milks from Aptimil to C&G comfort and what a difference. No screams, you can even touch his belly.

It sounds to me that your little one has reflux and needs gaviscone plus a milk like C&G comfort.

Let me know how you get on at the Drs.

Hi hun, yes this does sound like Leo..he is already on the comfort milk, has been for 5 weeks now and tried the gaviscon but it made him constipated and stopped working after 4 days (i gave it 10) then all the 'colicky' type symptoms come back, together with the being sick after every bottle.
It really does tend to differ how extreme it is from day to day, like one day he can be so settled, no sick/screams sleeps well and then the next its back with a vengeance..........

thinking of trying sma staydown, or should I wait untill 16th june appointment with pead for review?

have you tried a soy formula? Might be an allergy?

To be honest Im totally lost....

I tried him on Nutramigen1 hypoallergenic and hes been nothing but sick and in pain all day....bringing up all feeds today and screaming whilst doing so:cry:

Ive had to get advice from doc and put gaviscon in his feeds for tonight and switch his feed to a reflux milk tomorrow.

Hi,

I don't know if you've had any improvement in the last few days but I thought I'd post anyway.

My lo has been suffering since he was probably about a month old (we were always fobbed off with the "it's colic" line) and his reflux is only just getting slightly better. So I really sympathise with you. It is so awful seeing them in such pain and not being able to do anything. I've lost track of the number of times we've been back and forth to the doctors but it was only recently we were referred to the consultant. He changed his medication (said he doesn't use gaviscon) to Ranitidine and Domperidone and since then he's been a different baby! I'm not saying this is what you need for your lo but it's definitely helped for Louis. We tried several different milks, even tried weaning him early to help but nothing really worked for long. He's now weaned but still has Aptimel easy digest too (I think it's the same as the cow and gate comfort).

There are lots of things you can do to help aswell. I spent hours researching on the internet but it will take time for things to improve. I hope your lo gets some relief soon. I remember the days of constant screaming, being sick (he still is a little now), not enjoying his milk, arching his back etc. It does get better. If you need any more advice if I can, I will be happy to help.

Wishing you lots of luck and if you find a cure, be sure to pm me!

Betty was prescribed Ranitidine, too, it really helped alot with her reflux.
And hey, if it makes you feel any better, Betty outgrew it by about 3 and a half months. I know it may seem like a long way off, but it will come. Oh, and smaller amounts of food more frequently may help too. Although don't let him snack all the time, it can become habit.
