How long do the bottles stay sterile in the sterilizer once its been opened?!

Iv meticulously looked through the instruction booklet and can only find that the bottles stay sterile for 24hrs wen the sterilizer is unopened....

however if i put 4 bottles in and only want to use one, how long do the others stay sterile for after opening....??

They dont. Its pretty much a con by Tommee Tippee! My electric steriliser says the same, on the front of the packaging I assumed it would work on the same basis as the Avent IQ 24 that I had(it broke down, but used to sterilse by itself every 6 hours, so you'd always have sterile bottles)

But no, they need to stay contained. Which is daft, cause you're gonna need a bottle! As soon as you'veopened it,thats it! :(

Glad you asked I've been wondering this as well!

yeah once it's opened it's not sterile anymore; i thought that was the case with any sterilizer?

But, I was thinking after this, surely when you take out a bottle , put it together and use it for ready made milk while you're out, that counts as not being sterile either?

yes not sterile anymore, but very clean and more than ok to use x

Its so confusing when you start isnt it.

I just sterilise them all, then put them together with the water and sit them on the side till i need them. theyve been washed and sterilsed so they are safe to use.

Ok so....could i sterilize 4 bottles, take one out and use it immediately, but at that same time put the teats and lids on the other 3 bottles so technically they are 'sealed' sterilized and use them later on...?

 argh, stupid Tommee Tippee need to make themselves clear!!!

It confused the hell out of me as well. But once opened the other 3 bottles arnt sterile anymore i think! I gave up on using the microwave bit and use it as a cold water steriliser now with a milton tablet so I dont have to use all the bottles at once...can take one or two out and make up the bottles as needed then use the others later on as needed. Though thats probably not completly sterile either because the lids been opened :dohh:

Same, I couldn't work it out, so gave up and started using it as a cold water steriliser instead xx

Ok im new to this bottle thing....how do i use it as a cold sterlizer?!

I have the avent IQ 24, Basucally i wash all bottles, sterilise 6, boil kettle, take out all the bottles and put them together, with the boiled water, then keep them on the side, and as i need them i heat the water in the bottle warmer, add the powder, then heat again, and its at right temp. sometimes i just use one straight away and have to cool it down. I have 8 bottles and usually have 1 or 2 while i sterilise the rest, (6 at a time) that way im only washing/sterilising once a day!

Ahh right ok...so claire you leave 4 of the sterilized bottles with boiled water to cool to room temp on the side....

then as you want one, add the powder and warm-up? Do u find that the powder mixes as good when you put it into room temp water? I tried the refrigerated boiled water in bottles and the powder didnt mix as good in cold water...?

I dont put them in the fridge, i dont make it cold, just room temp. But sometimes i just take one out the steriliser and put boiled water in and then cooled it down under the tap, and left the others in the steriliser and use when needed, and if i was going out, like today, i took 3 sterilised bottles, added the boiling water and put them in the insulated pockets in change bag, then when it came to use them they were perfect warm temp.. The powder takes a bit more to mix into room temp water, but then i heat it again after anyways. so just depends what im doing etc that day, it gets easier. But i didnt go for micro steriliser because it only takes 4.. so means doing it more often and im generally not keen on microwaving plastic. some people make up the bottles and store them in the fridge..... so depends what suits you really,

To use as a cold water steriliser - get some milton sterilising tablets (just over a pound for 28 in tesco) fill your steriliser up to the highest mark (its 5 litre's i think) with cold water then drop in a sterilising tablet and then submerge your bottles into the solution. You have to change it every 24hours (the water solution) but I find it easier because once LO is finished a bottle I can get it washed and chuck it into the solution so I always have sterile bottles to use. Though one bad point the sterile solution is quite harsh on your hands and its blooming freezing especially after rinsing a pile of bottle in cold water then submerging them into the solution

I have been having nightmares with this as my son was born premature so I was being uber careful with sterilising. I had the Tomee Tippee microwave steriliser and when I spoke to the hospital they advised that I only sterilise each bottle as I need it as once the unit is opened the additional bottles would no longer be sterile. I have tried this and found that I was constantly washing and sterilising bottles. Even more annoying than this is the fact that I am wasting so much time when actually breast feeding - I only need a minimal amount of milk expressed to give my son his reflux medication.

I have finally given in and resorted to the milton cold water steriliser - they used the same at the hospital and are happy that everything remains sterile for 24 hours. Life is so much easier now. I wish I had known this sooner and would recommend the milton method to anyone and everyone now!

I don't like the smell of sterilising solution!
I dont either hence why i use the steam sterilisers. Stupid question but do u have to rinse the bottles first before u use them to get rid of the milton solution??? Have never used cold water sterilsers

I hate milton too, so we've pretty much always used the steam steriliser, or boiled in a pan with water.

Once a bottle is sterilised, it will become unsterile if it is exposed to air or touch so we used to sterilise all the bottles in the morning and fill them with cooled boiled water, put the tops and the lids on and stick them in the fridge.

You don't have to rinse stuff after taking it out of milton as it is safe for babies, but on the rare occasions when I used it, I preferred to do it so her milk and teats didn't taste of milton. I'd use boiled water as it warmed up the teats too.

Ive always sterilsed with a steam steriliser and made up bottles for a 24 hour period and then stored them in the fridge. Any that didnt get used in that time i threw away. Have used that method for all four of my children with no problems
