I haven't had this problem while being pregnant but whenever I've had thrush I've always used live yoghurt. I'm allergic to canestan so can't use it. Have to say I find the yoghurt really soothing on the itch - generally I eat some and use a tampon to put a little inside (not sure if that would be a good idea when pregnant - although it doesn't stay in).
Hope this helps hun - I know it's so uncomfortable!
I had a very bad case of thrush a few weeks ago and the doctor gave me a pessary (the pill you have to insert) and also the cream. As far as I'm aware the cream only relieves the external symptoms of itching etc, but to actually treat the thrush you have inside I'm afraid the pill will have to go up there! It may depend how bad your thrush is whether you can get away with just using the cream. I would get checked over by your midwife or doctor. Hope you get it sorted- its not very nice to have!
i thought i had got rid of it witht he cream because the itch had gone but i had an internal swab which picked up i still had it. Doc's gave me a pessery, never used it before but just did it before i went to bed. Feel much better for it to be honest, and has stopped alot of the discharge (sorry tmi)
What about the "Canesten Once" - the oral tablet instead of the pessary? (or the "Duo" where the cream comes with it as well) if you're concerned about inserting the pessary?
Apparently the oral pill is the one thing we are not allowed to take, not sure why.I was thinking maybe it's coz the pill will go in the bloodstream whereas the pessary just goes up and dissolves and ur cervix is closed so wouldn't affect baby...I hope xx
Surely if it's dissolving internally (and the external cream applied topically too) then some if it would get into your bloodstream anyway.. I don't know lol, just a thought. Maybe check with the pharmacist when you go to buy it anyway to see if you can take the pill as it seems like the safest option if you aren't comfortable with the pessary
My doctor said that the oral pill is dangerous to take in pregnancy, so although its more convienient and possibly more effective theres a reason they give you the pessary instead of the oral treatment.
Never knew that about the pill.. How strange, you learn something new every day! Although it seems a little strange if it's the same treatment but just a different method of taking it..
Looks like it's the pessary for you then They wouldn't prescribe or even recommend it for pregnant women if it wasn't safe. xx
I have been trying to get rid of thrush for 4 weeks now. Tried 2 different creams and the second cream soothed the itch but like you, so far I have been too scared to use the pessary up there
Oh and also, I have been itchy at the bum end too, and my doc thinks the thrush has spread to there and I keep reinfecting myself.
I have a midwife appointment tomorrow morning so I plan to ask her for further advice then. I'ts not causing me much discomfort but I don't want it to affect LO at the birth!
I get thrush every time i have antibiotics at the moment and my doc gives me the caneston cream filled pessary which he says is the safest one for pregnancy so maybe try looking for that one as its a bit easier than the pill as it doesn't take as long to work.
I didn't know you could use canesten when you were pregnant so I never tried it. I used mama naturals mummies and their tummies candida instead and it worked. I applied it with my fingers after they were thoroughly washed and WELL rinsed as any soap would make the thrush worse. It never came back and that was two months ago.
