Hi... Im going out of my mind... My mother just had to undergo surgery to have her foot up to her mid shin amputated due to her diabetes getting so bad. She hadnt been watching her diet and had a sore on her foot that got out of control. Shes a heavy woman amd they say if she heals from the amputation, she will be able to wear a fake leg amd walk again. Does amyone know anout this? Have they seen this happen? I have read that people that undergo amputations due to diabetes do not survive long after due to cardio vascular disease and congestive heart failure. I also have a friend who died 3 years after he had his ownw leg amputated. Please, if anyone knows anythin, please help me...

As far as I am aware there is no reason why she couldn't wear a prosthetic limb. However, if her diabetes continues to be poorly controlled then the likelihood of more complications arising will increase. Has she seen a dietitian at all?

Hi" amd thank you for responding. She just saw a dietician today. She is on a 1800 calorie diet and its also more rsstricted because she has an infection in her kidneys. They are hoping that the infection that was in her foot was completely cut off, otherwise thay have to cut more off and if it goes abover her knee, there is no chance for a prosthetic. Iam teying to re,ain hopefull. She is being beru positive. She said she is ok with losing her limb if it means she can stay here longer with her grandkids. But she also understands she needs to be aggressively proactive with trying to control her health from now on. At least with whatever she CAN help. We know there has been damage done.
