:hi: My baby had her 8 month development review today and overall they were really impressed with her and said she was advanced for her age. But they have completley worried me...when they where checking her hips she said that her leg creases were slightly out of line and that i needed to make a GP appointment to get her referred for a hip scan to be on the safe side. she told me not to worry but thats all ive done because she also said that the other hip didnt go up into the socket. She said tho that she doesnt appear to be in pain and is bearing weight down great and crawling fine.

I was basically wondering if anyone elses LO had a hip scan and what was the outcome? Everyone is telling me not to worry but id also like to know what worse case scenario is?

My LO had a hip scan when he was about 8 weeks old - that was coz he was born footling breech though.
Sorry I've not been much help.
xx

thanks and its ok will be nice to hear everyones experiance. im more concerned cos its the leg when she was born looked like she had a twisted foot and they told me it was from the way she was laid in the womb and it straigtned itself out but now shes crawling she sometimes twists it still am just wondering if its linkied in with her hip and there is something wrong.

Yeah same my lo had his at 6 weeks. Hope all is well with ur LO x

Well I had hip dysplasia as a kid and it wasn't caught until I was 5yrs old! When Preston was in the NICU we told them this and they set up for him to have a hip scan at about a month old to just make sure everything was ok. Apparently it can run in families and all babies should be checked with a scan if the mother had it, especially girls. We were never told this with my other boys but thankfully they are fine.

Preston had his scan and it was no big deal at all, he was fine throughout, nothing painful. Luckily he is fine

How do they do the scan? and whats hip dysplasia?

My LO had a hip scan as her foot bent in when the paediatrician checked her before we were discharged.

We went for appt at our local hospital. The sonographer laid her on her side, on like a basin similar to what the health visitors use for weighing them. My husband had to hold her in that position while they took the scan pictures and then they moved her on to the other side.

It is totally painless and they just checked the alignment of her hips. Our scan was all clear, it is very common. She was a big baby and I always measured big on my MW appts, so they think it was just the way she was in the womb.

Hope this helps a bit xx

Hip dysplasia is where your hips are out of place, it's what they will be checking for with the scan. Making sure they are in their sockets properly. Both of mine were out of place so when they did the checks they do at check ups they didn't catch it since they were both out of place and moved the same.

For him with the scan they had him laying on the table but rolled up blankets around him to sort of cuddle him and he laid on his side and they would move his leg around a bit getting the views they needed and it's with an ultrasound machine. Then they put him on his other side and did the same to that hip

There are a few of us here with babies with hip dysplasia. My DD was diagnosed Xray at about 10 months. Creases can be a sign, but can be nothing at all. If your lo was breech that's a factor too. Also female and first born, family history and low fluid or space in the uterus. Good luck with the scan and I would recommend not googling. If you have any questions then I'll answer what I can.

Hi, our baby has hip dysplasia and as the PP mentioned, that is what they will be checking for. Our LOs condition was caught at birth and since then he has had numerous ultrasound scans. They are not painful and he didn't cry during any of them. I always keep a bottle or paci ready to distract him though. They place him on a padded table and use the wand to go over his hips. They have to bend his legs and roll him around a little bit but nothing uncomfortable. However, here in the US, it is my understanding that scans are done until 6 months of age. After that, they use xrays.

Our baby was put into a harness to treat his dysplasia. The goal is to try to get the hip to sit in the socket and form properly as he grows. Treatment can be different for older babies though. Either way, it is treatable and best caught early in life. But I really hope the appointment goes well and all is just fine with your LO!!

Poppy was found to have a click at her check Just before leaving hospital, it was only heard that one time but the doc referred het for a scan anyway as dysplasia is a lot simpler to treat in babies, we went for the scan and found get hip sockets were shallow, the specialist wanted to put her in s harness for two weeks to hold het legs out so the sockets could deepen but I freaked and didn't want her In it. He told Me to try double nappies for thee weeks and then be re scanned.
I did Google developmental dysplasia as I wanted to know more, I did find it is common and mainly in girls also breech babies can be affected, the harness worlds wrll and ddh is a lit easier to treat in babies, so when we went back for second scan I was prepared for the harness but her sockets had deepened thankfully two nappies had worked.
Don't worry hun it is common and easily fixed if she does have ddh. I know its scary.
Try putting het in double nappies while you wait for the scan, it could help. :flower:
Sorry for typos, I'm on my phone lol x

Also, for gemie and anyone else who has a baby with a hip problem, we've got a group over here.

mine did! couple of weeks ago my LO had an ultrasounds of her hips as its routine in my hospital to check the maturity of them. Outcome-slightly immature and she has a re-scan in 2 months. No big deal.

My lo had a hip scan quite early as she was extended breech when born. It was fine though. She hasn't had an 8 month development review though so am wondering when we might get one as she is now 10.5 months old!

My lo is due hers on 12th august, they were doing her newborn checks before discharge and I said I had HD at birth, so she was automatically referred! I'm glad t hear it doesn't sound too bad a scan! Thanks! :) x

My LO was referred at around 8 months, he was fine but the scan was basically lying him down on a padded thingy and I had to wear a big heavy coat thing to protect me or something and hold his legs down perfectly straight only took a minute or two

My LO had an xray as she was breech and also because I noticed uneven creases.

My GP referred LO for a scan yesterday at her 8 week check as her creases were uneven.

my little man had one done when he was about 4 weeks old as his half brother had problems with his hip

this is pretty much what happened to us, both me and my sister had it and with me it was picked up late so I was in a cast but my sis only needed a splint, it runs in our family and it seems to skip a generation but its better to be safe then sorry

the scan took less than five minutes and its more of a precaution so try not to worry :flower:
