Anyone's twins measuring a week ahead at the 20 week scan?

Mine are 5 and 6 days ahead of themselves at 19 weeks.

My singleton DD at 19 weeks was 6 days ahead, and she only got bigger and bigger and was a few weeks ahead by the mid 3rd tri, 9lb12oz at birth at full term.

Very similar story with my DS. (9lb5oz)

I was just wondering what will happen with the twins.

I'm thinking my options are:

*They will slow down in growth because of the lack of room
*They will continue growing, run out of room, and deliver themselves really early
*They will continue growing and not come out and my tummy will split open!!


I just really dont think my body could fit two 9 and a half pounders in there, and am curious to see what happens with twins and sizing etc! At what point would they start slowing down growthwise?

Any stories?

Well I am no where near the 20 week mark, and I already have one that is measuring 4 days ahead?!
I really hope for your sake you don't get two 9lbrs!!! But your still tiny, so I don't think you will have that problem...

Cali you havent seen me lately, tiny is not one of the words I would use to describe me!!! LOL
Here's my bump today, I am the exact same size and weight as I was at 30 weeks with one baby!!!! This pregnancy is so different! >.<

Twins usually grow on a singleton growth curve until 30wks, then 'chunk up' after that but at a slower rate than singles due to restricted room. They do generally deliver earlier but not always and not necessarily because of uterine size. Preterm labour is about much more than uterine size, which is why some women deliver smaller twins at 32wks, and others deliver larger babies at term.

If I had gone to 40wks my boys would have been about 9.8 and 8.8Ibs. My first singleton was only 9.1 at 40wks, so not much different to him. on that basis yours could well be 10.4 and 9.4 at 40wks based on your singleton weights. Take 10ozs off that if they're born at a more typical 38wks and you'll have two at 8.9 and 9.9! (not trying to scare you chicken). I have noticed tho that most women with previous 9/10Ibers here have twins weighing in at a more respectable 7/8Ibs so it is more likely that's where you'll be.

Main thing I guess is that theyre healthy. I never worried about baby size, just kept my eyes on getting safely to term xxx

Thanks Lizzie, that clears a lot up! I'm pleased they will be a good size and not tiny little things needing NICU (well that's if all goes to plan)! C section seems to be winning right now tho! We'll see...
Its gonna be interesting to see when they do start slowing down, at the moment they are showing no signs of it yet!

Incidentally, my smaller boy always measured 2wks ahead on scan from 24wks and ended up being 7 13 at 38wks. The larger one was 5wks ahead just to give you some idea with yours x
