Hi my baby is only 2 weeks old and has been constipated. We got him having 1 poo a day by giving water and using the pre made cartons of Aptamil stage 1 at night. However, this still seemed really painful and hard work for him.

I saw Aptamil Comfort yesterday and changed him to it today. Tonight he has had 4 loose stools in 2 hours and is really unsettled. Is this normal??

I think I will change back to normal Aptamil until I see the health visitor on Monday as after reading the box it advises not to use without medical supervision but now I'm worried I've harmed my baby. Poor thing.

Any advice would be apreciated, thanks.

Hi there -we started on the stage 1 and moved to comfort. There is a definite change in that the poop is less thick that before and sometimes a little runny, but we swapped because LO has really bad wind and griping problems as well as a little reflux - not because of constipation. Most advice I've been told is when you try something new, try it for at least 3 days as the change needs time to settle.
You haven't harmed your baby by the way! Was he actually constipated on the stage 1 (hard pellet poop) or just making lots of noises, effort and grunting / going red? I've learnt that a heck of a lot of babies seem to be in hard labour when they poo and it's perfectly normal (inc mine)! So potentially the stage 1 was fine.

Thanks for your help I am going to discuss it with the health visitor on Monday and decide which milk to stick with. He does have hard poos if we dont give him water regularly and use the pre made milk at night - the preservatives in the formula must help. I got a shock when reading the box on the comfort milk and it said it was a medical solution and the decision to use should not be taken by parents. In this case I don;t know why it is available off the shelf.

Anyway thanks for replying, we shall see what the professionals say.

Louise.

They have to put that statement on the box to cover their own backs, in case someone tries to sue them if their baby has a bad reaction to the formula (because it's not the bog standard infant milk). If that makes sense?

Definitely ask your HV if you're concerned :)

My LO didn't get on well with Aptimil comfort, it didn't help her constipation at all :dohh: What my HV recommended was water (as you're doing), and also small amounts of either fresh orange juice, fresh apple juice, or prune juice off a sterilised spoon. That helped for us, and then it seemed to be something she grew out of in the end :)

I used it with kacey without mesical supervision. I used it because kacey had bad colic and reflux. It did losen her stools and she often went twice a day.
