I've switched my son from cow and gate to aptamill comfort. It seems to be doing wonders, he's bringing his wind up much easier now and it isn't taking half as long to get a bottle down him. And so far he hasn't projectile vomited, just a normal amount of spit up.

Is anyone else using this? How do you find it and how do you make it?

With cow and gate I was pouring out the water for the days feeds and then adding the powder when needed. Someone told me with comfort milks you need to make it with fresh boiled water so that something in the milk works properly? Is it true?? I haven't got time to make bottles up fresh and cool them down with a screaming baby! Who has?!

Thanks xx

My mum has used aptamil comfort since my sister for 7 months now. We did used to make it from fresh boiled water as it didnt mix properly otherwise but now we keep cool boiled water in the fridge seperate and mix it with fresh boiling water when we need to make a feed.

I had the aptimil reflux milk which is thicker milk and i would fill the bottles up with half the amount of water needed for a feed and then cool and put in the fridge, id then top up with with fresh boiled water when needed and the milk would mix fine, do you have to let the comfort milk stand for 7 mins like you have to with the reflux one?

I have the perfect prep machine which mixes it well but when we're not home I use 4 oz cooled boiled water, add powder, mix, add 3 oz boiling water, mix again. Takes 2 minutes to do.

I've used the comfort and the anti-reflux and you definitely need to have the water hotter to get either of those to mix properly. I you look closely once you've shook the bottle you'll be able to see little bits the the formula stuck to the inside of the bottle if the water is too cool. It's hard to explain, but they are almost transparent!

What do you do if you're out and about?? Do you take a flask of hot water?

He use to wriggle alot when we tried to give him a bottle and this morning when I switched to aptamill comfort and variflow teats, this is his little face, he looks like he's in heaven lol

I just used to heat it up before I went and hope it was still hot enough when I needed it. If it wasn't I would try and get it warmed where I was.

He looks like he's enjoying that, bless him :)

So would it be ok if I did that?? He's happy to drink milk at room temp.

I just made one and saw what you mean about left over formula that hasn't dissolved. But I heated it up in a jug of hot water and it seemed to help?

I think it being undissovled every once in a while wont do any harm, but I noticed that Ruben was always hungrier when it didn't dissolve properly. I found that rather than 30 seconds in the microwave, 40 would do the trick with getting it to dissolve better so it didn't take much more.

You're supposed to make bottles with boiling water because the formula isn't sterile and contains bacteria. The boiling water sterilises the formula and kills the bacteria.

If you want to make a bottle that doesn't need cooling down then you need to keep some previously boiled water, cooled in the fridge in a flask or jug or in the bottles.

So for Lily we put 2oz boiling water into a bottle, add all the formula needed for the feed, in this case 5oz, mix and then add 3oz of cooled boiled water, this makes it the right temperature for feeding straight away, is fast and easy, but is a safe way to make the bottles. Just make sure you have a second bottle for measuring out the cool water as you can't just top up the first bottle to 5oz, the milk powder means that the level of fluid in the bottle looks like more, so you'd probably use too little cold water.

When we go out we take a thermos of hot fresh boiled water and a thermos of cooled boiled water and just do what we would do at home, sometimes we just use ready feed cartons while we're out, it really depends how long we're going to be out! You can buy insulated bottle bags that can keep a bottle warm or cool for 4 hours, so you could make your bottle at home, pop it in the bag and use within that time.

Did you read the back of the milk powder carton? It does say on there that you need to use boiling water. If baby has been throwing up a lot then I think you should try following the guidelines, they are there for a reason. To get around the "making a bottle while baby is screaming" thing try and keep track of when he feeds for a couple of days, or when his last feed was, and then make it around the time he is due one. They are good for 2 hours out of the fridge so as long as he eats it in that time it's fine. As someone else has mentioned you're effectively making the bottles with cold water, so it wont mix right and that's important, the formula HAS to be made in a certain way for the baby to get the benefit from the vitamins, etc. If it's not mixing half the powder then obviously that's not good!

Some cues when baby is hungry are sucky faces, little noises while sleeping and moving around a lot, sucking on hands, etc.

We made all Lily's bottles up fresh and cooled them until we started doing the half boiling/half cooled boiled water way, sometimes you just have to do what you've got to do!

We did this too with the cooled boiled water but I'm so lazy we bought a perfect prep machine. It gives a shot of boiled water to sterilise milk and then tops up with body temp water making the perfect bottle! I've noticed thou at times the milk never seemed to dissolve before using the machine. X

I have been tempted to buy the machine.
However I have found that making a bottle and topping up with boiled water works for us. Especially considering when Reuben wakes up the dog wants to go out in the garden for a wee anyways. If I'm already heading downstairs, may as well pop the kettle on lol
