Hi,

My son is 6 weeks old today - he has all the signs of reflux so I have him on Gaviscon in his bottles for the last 2 days (he is on Aptimal First) - it has made a difference and he is not fussing when feeding anymore and he is a little more settled. However I am thinking he may be a bit colic also.

I was going to change him to Aptimal comfort just in case he has colic and also because the gaviscon is making his poo hard and difficult for him to go. I tried to add the gaviscon to the aptimal comfort and the milk wouldnt come out of the bottle - so I am going to get the Anti Colic Teats Size 2 Medium Flow - but can I add the gaviscon to the formula or is it better to give him the gaviscon by syringe before the feed?

Any advice on this would be great.

I was going to take him off the gaviscon and just try the comfort for a few days but I dont want to risk the reflux being bad again - has anyone used the comfort formula on its own for colic and reflux?

Thanks

its safe to use gaviscon and comfort together but only put 1 in. We used comfort on its own and it worked for a few days then we needed the gaviscon x

hi bathbabe - thanks for your reply.
was the change over to comfort ok for your baby - did it take him long to get used to it? Also did you put the gaviscon directly in with the comfort formula - i seem to be reading that you have to give it to them seperately because of the thickness of the formula?

Also, when you put him on comfort formula - did he drink more? Because its lighter I am wondering will he need more oz's?

Thanks for your advice.

:)

It is advised on the back of the carton that comfort milk should not be used with any thinckening agents, gaviscon is a thickening agent and therefore i wouldnt do it.

he was fine with the change. It can take up to 2weeks to make a difference tho so you should stick to it for at least 2weeks. Yeah you can add the gaviscon into the comfort milk (iv spoke to people from both cow and gate and aptimal and they have both said its ok) as the comfort is a thicker feed but doesnt contain a thickener. He actually started drinking a oz less, i guess because its harder to drink? But he has always only ever gone 3hrs between feeds. Except at night. But every baby is different, its trial and error! But as i said before only put 1 gaviscon in because if you put in 2 it will cause constipation again x

Iv just had a look, i dont see it? but as i said before its a thicker feed, doesnt contain a thickener and iv spoke to both companys and my hv, and paed they all said its ok

it says it on the back of the gaviscon box, wheather it contains a thickener or not, its a thicker feed and therefore you are just thickening it more by adding gaviscon

I thought you ment the comfort box :dohh: but the gaviscon box says not to use with thickening agents or milks with thickening agents. Comfort milk doesnt contain a thickening agent, therefore safe to use together. A thick feed is what you need when your baby has reflux so i dont get where your comming from? There is NO problem using them together.

Sophie has been on Aptamil Comfort and Gav for months with no problems (apart from it not curing her reflux totally, but thats a diff strory - but it does help) x

im juist saying what i was told by my gp, dont shoot the messenger!
:flower:

Hi Mrs A - thanks for your reply - I was also told not to use the gaviscon in the bottle but I was told by the Aptimal careline that I could give him the gaviscon before his feed - i think the only reason she said was that it could make the feed too thick for him to drink but there is no harm in giving them both at feeds.

Bathbabe - i am hearing from a few different people like yourself that they used the comfort and the gaviscon in the bottle together with no issues - i suppose if the baby is able to drink it without any difficulty then there should be no issue, right? Am i right in thinking that you gave your LO both Aptimal comfort and gaviscon together in the bottle at feeds? Did you have to go up a teat size?

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for you reply - do you give Sophie the Aptimal Comfort and Gaviscon in a bottle together ? Did you have to change the teat size when you started this?

I have TT Anti Colic bottles - using size 1 teats at the mo but have size 2 ready to use for the comfort.

we use cow and gate comfort which is basically the same. Yes both in bottle, and we use the variflo teats. If you give LO gaviscon before the feed just because you dont want to mix them together then there isnt much point as when you give them the bottle its all gunna get mixed up in their tummy anyway and by putting it in the milk you save yourself faffin about with mixing it with water and all the other bits to get it in their mouth. Iykwim? X

You will almost certainly need size 2 teats hon x

yep, this is right!

If it said it on the tub of milk then i would agree but it says it on the gaviscon box. Although comfort is a thicker feed it hasnt like bathbabe said got a thickening agent in it.

Sorry Im not near tub. Is that in the comfort milk?

it doesnt say on the comfort box not to mix with a thickener!
