Aptimal Comfort + Gaviscon

it doesnt say on the comfort box not to mix with a thickener!

no, it has the above ingredient which is a thickening agent in the comfort milk, and the gaviscon says not to mix with any milk that contains thickening agents (i.e the above ingredient)

Ive looked on the Cow and Gate comfort and cant see that ingredient, there are other sodiums but not the one you mentioned, maybe its just the Aptamil one.

Dont like the stuff any way, made Millies bum bleed she was so constipated with the gaviscon.

It is advised on the back of the carton that comfort milk should not be used with any thinckening agents, gaviscon is a thickening agent and therefore i wouldnt do it.

yep, this is right!
But no, it isnt

I'm sorry, I only spent 4 years doing a masters in chemistry degree...i could have sworn that sodium alginate what a thickener!!
It isnt listed as an ingredient on my cow and gate box

we use sma staydown - so it has a thickener and I know not to add gaviscon etc to it (not that we use it anyway) BUT my GP / HV said that it shouldn't be mixed with any staydown / reflux formulas or comfort options...?

Crikey there is so much confusion with this. But if you can give it before the feed, like someone said on here, think it was Bathbabe it all mixes in there tummy anyway.

With the Sma staydown, they do use a thickening agent so can understand why you shouldn't use this.

Have we come to a conclusion on this? I'm thinking of trying Millie on just one sachet in with the cow and gate comfort, would this be ok?

No conclusion. Iv done it this way for 7months, works for us

Thanks Bathbabe. Can you just remind me, did your lo ever suffer with constipation with the Gaviscon? I'm worried about putting her through that again.

Yeah but hes ok using 1 gaviscon with the comfort milk. Constipation was why we switched to comfort in the first place (before we used gaviscon)

might get advice from hv but just thought id ask here too, my baby has half sachet of gaviscon in 4oz milk, am thinking of using actimil comfort (he on 1 atm) would i still need gaviscon or would comfort stop his reflux and constipation, also if you give gaviscon before a feed how do you administer it? thanks

you cant use aptamil comfort with gaviscon as the formula has added thickeners xx

this is the documentation i go by as to what can be added to what, take a look and it tells you what is pre thickened and what is not!

Oh and Bathbabe, you can keep your silly smileys to yourself.

You really need to read up on these different formulas that you dont use before you start giving out information, as i said read the above link, it say that aptamil has thickeners in therefore CANNOT SAFELY be used with gaviscon, its up to you what you do with your child, but dont give out wrong information without any proof to back it up!

My Information to back it up is that i spoke to somebody from Aptamil who told me it was safe. so dont go accusing me of not doing my research

you spoke to someone? hearsay isnt proof imo, and i wouldnt give it to my baby cause you sais so, theres written proof above!

IF you read it properly I said I spoke to somebody from APTAMIL
and to prove it i just asked again heres the convo

Sharon - Baby Care Advisor and Mum: morning Amber

amber: hey

amber: So can you add infant gaviscon into comfort milk?

Sharon - Baby Care Advisor and Mum: The gaviscon can be added to our milks including the aptamil comfort milk, the only thing you need to watch is this will make the feed very thick so the teat needs to be a single holed, med or fast flow

Hiya...don't know if it has already been posted (my LO is waking up so must be quick) but when they are very young reflux is often confused with colic, I know with my LO it was. Everyone told me it was colic but she had severe reflux which really became most obvious around the 10 week mark.
I would give the gaviscon a good try first - it may just be reflux upsetting her and not colic.
There seems to be some confusion between the two when babies are very small x
