Girls please please read this before you even think about taking ASPRIN !!!

I was put on asprin for my heart i suffer with S.V.T. (supra Ventricular Tachycardia), and have been on it for nearly a year. In that year i have had 4 early miscarriages and was at the end of my tether and very upset as all the fertility tests that we went through couldnt pin point any problem with us concieving and that we should fall really easy.

I have just been to my local BOOTS chemist to purchase more Pregnacare Healthy conception vits and the chemist himself asked me to go into the consulting room for a chat. In there he asked me if i was the lady who was taking asprina dn i said yes and he told me in no uncertain terms to STOP taking it as it causes miscarriages.
He explained :- when you fall pregnant and the egg develops into a feotus the asprin transforms the little bundle into a clot of blood cells and expells it between 5 and 12 weeks depending. You can imagine how i felt , relieved to know why this has been ahppening and angry that my GP knew that we were trying to concieve but still put me on the asprin.
So on Monday i will be making an appointment to go to see the GP and get referred to a cardiologist to get a different medication that wont harm the trying to form baby and that will help with ttc and having a healthy baby.

So please please DO NOT TAKE ASPRIN GIRLS NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT IT HELPING BECAUSE IT DOES'NT

thanks for the info - you must be fuming mad!!! It sounds like a simple check that all your medical people should have known about!!! Sounds like incompetence to me!!

Good luck moving forward x

yep thats how i feel but relieved too and the chemist assures me i will be fine not taking it from today at 7dpo with all the signs i have he says they are really good so lets hope he is right, i did a smeaky opk yesterday mid morning and it came up positive and the chemist laughed and said there you go no damage done so far so we will see what the 17th hpt shows good luck hun and thank you for your post xxx

I dont know if its helpful to state that aspirin is harmful overall as it IS helpful to some woman particularly those with antiphospholipid syndrom. As aspirin is a bloodthinner it prevents tiny blodclots from forming and essentually starving the embryo/fetus. This is of no harm to the mother as these clots are too small too cause her any damage. Aspirin also helps to build the lining in the womb and as such can aid implantation.

Having said that, i would probably agree that without knowing ones medical history you could unwittingly cause yourself harm should you take aspirin, as i mentioned it is a bloodthinner and as such could cause bleeding in some individuals and likely to cause a mc in the same people.

I discussed this with my GP and he said that although it is harmless for most people (the dose suggested is the lowest dose aspirin, called baby aspirin in the US, usually 78 -82mg) there weren't any studies suggesting if was beneficial for a large section of the population and as such it would be better not to take it until such a study suggests otherwise or one gets diagnosed with a clotting issue.

Im sorry about your mc's and i hope that the future will be much kinder to you :hugs:

All the best, xxxx

well your doc against the pharmacist have a lot to argue over as the later is better qualified at what drugs do what and he would know so all i can do is go by him as some gp's ive encountered are a waster of space but thanks anyway

No offence cause i dont know what type of GP you have (mine is great and very clued up) but i would take my dr's word over a pharmacist anyday - particularly one who deems it correct to suggest that your signs are really good, as you put it. I hope of course that this is your month, regardless.

I, however was simply stating that blanket statements are not helpful and that what works for one person may not work for others and vice versa.

I have also run this by a good friend of mine who not also has a pharmacology degree but is currently doing a doctorate in pharmacology, and she agrees with me.

Inkd, I really hope that he was right in your case and that your next bfp will be the stickiest bean EVER!!! You do deserve it! :)

Just adding my two cents in, my husbands cousin had numerous miscarriages until they put her on aspirin because she was having something with clotting around the umbilical cord and once on Aspirin she had her healthy baby. It all depends on the person, but some people do need the Aspirin to have a healthy baby.

All the Fertility specialists i have seen have told me to take a low dose aspirin while doing ivf as it helps blood flow. Everyone is different and should be checked out before taking it.
i have also read that it can cause MCs so you do wonder who is right!

i cant imagine how annoyed you must be hun.
thank you so much for sharing.
i would also like to add... DONT let your OH's eat peas. apparently they stunt the growth of healthy sperm and can make TTC alot more difficult. xxxx

Morning Inkdchick,

Sounds like lots of conflicting advice - but it seems that as ever it's 'horses for courses' - hope you are managing to get to the bottom of this???

I would think it's something you would need to discuss with a fertility doctor before taking. Per my Fertility Clinic it's OK to take Low Dose (81mg or less) but nothing more as it may be harmful. I still stick with Tylenol for pain though.

Obviously there is a lot of debate over this as I've read much conflicting information online... which is frustrating for sure!!!!!

inkdchick- I truly hope this is what helps you!!!! Fingers crossed you get that much deserved sticky bean soon!!!!!

Hi all, I'm a newbie, but just saw the title of this thread and thought I'd add that my fertility specialist said definitely NO to me using low-dose aspirin when I asked her about it (I had been taking it). (Never mind that I've read recommendations to use it in MANY places, online and in books. So much conflicting information! drives me crazy! but on the asprin, I'm going to stick with my consultant's advice; I can only suggest that everyone check get their GP/consultant's advice before using it.)

I have a friend who has had 12 mc. She has now been diagnosed with lupus and prescribed asprin. I think it depends on the person and condition they have.

I agree with Maliah09, it depends on the indication for taking it. For those with a condition it will help (e.g. antiphopholipid syndrome) it may be beneficial. For those with no medical indication, the risks may outweigh the benefits.

One also has to remember why Inkdchick was told to take aspirin in the first place - which was to prevent clots forming in her heart (due to the SVT) and flying off to the brain (causing a stroke). The risk of this happening without the aspirin then has to be weighed up against the problems it may cause. There is no straightforward answer to this, as its about choosing which risk you want to take and different people (including the patient herself, her doc and her pharmacist) may all take a different view on it.

Hope the appt with your GP has gone well and good luck for future conceiving!
