Right where to start... My little lady is nearly 5 weeks. She was on Aptamil from birth and around week 3-4 she got reflux, and was very much in pain with trapped wind. I changed her milk to Hipp Organic and this seemed to have helped a little with the wind, but reflux still there.

Have been prescribed Gaviscon which she has 1 dose in each feed.

She hasn't been feeding "right" for a good few weeks now :( she use to have 3-4oz easy and now she is bitting and bobbing and having 1oz here and there and maybe more at night but never seems to finish a bottle.

I want her to feed normally again and enjoy her milk :( the Gaviscon is making her poo very hard and when I changed her nappy there was the smallest bit of blood :( I feel gutted for her.

Shall I ditch the Gaviscon and move to a reflux milk? My doctor is reluctant to give her medicine and is such an effort to get them to listen and prescribe something!

Can anyone please offer any advice? I can only assume she's gaining weight as I had a c section and cannot get to the weigh in sessions at the doctors and not due to have a visit from the HV until she is 6 weeks. She has always gained weight from birth but since having reflux I don't know how she has been :(

God this is so difficult! :(

Deep breath MaMa. I dont have any experience with reflux, but didn't want to read this and not reply because I can sense how upset you are. The tiny amount of blood in the diaper is enough for you to call her Dr and demand advice. If she is having to push that hard or is bleeding from how hard her bowel movements are she needs help, poor baby! I am in the US so not at all familiar with your types of formula but could the original formula have been continued if you found a different bottle to help decrease her gas? Also, if she having a significant amount of reflux that will have a direct impact on how little she wants to feed. Please call her Dr, you both need some help with this. Neither of you should have to suffer thru. Good luck.

id call the doctor and demand ranitadine..i had it prescribed for ds2 when gaviscon didnt work. he had silent reflux so wasnt throwing up just so uncomfortable and sore which was horrible but the ranitadine was like a miracle!x

^^WSS, blood means it must sting for her quite a bit (my 1st son was the same, he was also a reflux baby), I would demand the medication. Reflux-specific milks are kind of a last resort as they are made of less than great ingredients (ie. #1 ingredient may be corn syrup solids) so you will want to push for a stronger med first.

Okay I have spoke to the Doctor who has told me to just give her a spoon of water to help soften her poo?!

Wtf. I mean she will barely touch her milk let alone water.

She said give it another week and basically ignored all I said. X

My LO got constipated on having but giving a bit of cooled boiled water really worked wonders. She was not impressed when she realised it wasn't milk in her bottle and cried hard after only a sip or two. I had to do it a few times to get enough in. I was aiming for 1/2 to 1oz. It took a good few hours to take effect. Good luck x

I heard it is common for the reflux drugs to cause constipation. Can you ask about prune juice? My friend had a baby on reflux meds (Gaviscon) and she said the prune juice worked every time!
Other than that could you give her a warm bath and gently massage her tummy with some lotion to help get her to pass.
I think once she poos more reguarly she will be more enthusiastic to feed.
Another thing i find that helps is warm milk, if i give my two cold or room temp milk they dribble it out and hardly want any/dont suck very hard. Might be worth a go but not too warm obviously.

Hope she feels better soon :hugs:

Make an appt to see another Doctor and then put in a complaint.

Push for them to switch the meds. We had the exact same issue with Gaviscon. It was like LO was pooing sand.

Ranitidine was good (when we could get it in him!).

:hugs:

I'm not sure about reflux but my LO was constipated with SMA Gold and my dr suggested water but changing to Aptamil because it's a thinner milk. I did this but it made him so sick and uncomfortable with wind that I switched him back, I'm convinced it was causing reflux symptoms because it was so thin. Now I give him at least one feed of the ready made SMA Gold which seems to keep him regular and make up his other feeds using SMA Gold powder. Apparently the ready made cartons have a laxative effect and it works for us.

Definitely seek a second opinion on the blood though. I hope you get sorted soon.

Hun iv been there gone through all the formulas my baby girl has suffered from the word go hip organic seemed to be the only formula to slightly help followed by 5 ml of gripwater the doctor gave her gavisgon to put in her feed i have noticed for the past 3 days she is not enjoying hef bottle and plays with her milk she is contantly straining doctors say its normal i dont think its normal when ur baby screams out in pain and does hard pebble poos
i have ordered a formula which can be on prescription it sorts out wheezing reflux colic and many other baby complaints its expensive and i am yet to try it it called nutramigen lipil stage 1
Xx

Hey i haven't read the other posts so im unsure what others have said, but i have alot of experience with reflux so i know exactly how you are feeling. My lo never fed properly for the first few months and i could tell by looking at her she was in so much pain, it was heartbreaking. At first we tried her with cow and gate comfort milk. Helped at first but after a week she was back to normal but we just kept her on that milk anyway. Then we was given the gaviscon. It just made her more sick and constipated aswell (which is normal with gaviscon) so i took her off straight away.

We went back to the doctors and she was prescribed domperidone and ranitidine. After about 3 weeks on these medicines i noticed no difference. The domperidone had helped with the sickness but the ranitidine hadn't helped with the pain. I'd had enough by this point and felt like nobody cared about my lo. Because she was putting on weight they wasnt fussed. One day i took her up to the hospital and demanded i was seen my someone higher and refused to leave until i saw someone. Eventually after watching me ball my eyes out for half an hour and seeing my poor baby screaming they sent someone down to see me. They prescribed me with omperozole and also told me to stick to the domperidone. After a few days she was honestly like a different baby. She wasnt crying as much, she was feeding better, i could lay her on her back, it was amazing. Shes 5 1/2 months now and still on the medicine and shes doing well. Shes on cow and gate anti reflux milk aswell which has been fantastic with the sickness.

I know exactly what you are going through, its hell. I was in tears every day and there was nothing i could do to help and i wouldnt wish it on anyone. My advice would be to push and push until you get medicine for her. I videoed my lo and showed it to the doctors so they could see exactly how she was. If they still refuse then file a complaint. Good luck hun x

My lo tried this aswell before the anti reflux milk but unfortuantly it didn't work for her but this could be an option. It is expensive (i think £9.49 for a 400g tub?) but i got it on prescription which i think everyone else can aswell, could be worth a shot x

I also took my LO to an osteopath which is supposed to be great for reflux babies but i didnt really notice a change in her, but everyone else i know said they were amazing for their babies. The osteopath recommended i tried 'Nanny milk' which is goats milk, it is expensive but he said its easily digested. I never tried it as i simply couldn't afford it but if you can maybe you could try, heres the link xx

Refluxy babies us tough work but it does get better. Small consolation when you're in the thick of it. Ok so for us we bf for a month then went onto hipp organic which didn't really help reflux but great for her weight gain. Obviously not a solution so tried gaviscon which made her constipated & then demanded sma stay down on prescription. Best thing we ever did!!! First few days or maybe week wasn't great but think it was her body adjusting. She was colicy but that's because it's a thicker feed & their bodies have to work harder to digest the milk now it's brilliant!! Winding well & refluxing less & generally a happier baby. This could be that her gut has matured but I still think its a great milk. Sma advice line is also great. It's a faff to make but once you get into a routine it's fab pm me if you do go onto it & I'll answer any questions.

The osteopathy also seemed to help. She still has it 5 months on but she's much more comfortable & much less stressed!!

Every baby is different so go with your gut. Good luck xx

Hiya,

I thought about the SMA staydown and have bought a tub. Does it stop the constipation? X

Hiya,

LO yes for us it has, she has been fine on the staydown. Sometimes her poo is thick and paste but never pellet like. Gp said if she does get constipated or if her poo gets too thick then give her a little bit of cool boiled water X
