Babies born between 35-36 weeks?

Hi ladies.

I'm looking to hear if anyone else has had their babies between 35 and 36 weeks and how they were? Did they require anytime in NICU?

My waters broke last weekend and I've been given steriod injections and I am on antibiotics however yesterday I went into the hospital and baby's heart rate was very high for over two hours (it did eventually calm down a bit). I have also been feeling a bit under weather and so they are concerned about infection. There was talk of keeping me in and even induction but I was allowed to come home after several blood tests and seeing 3 doctors but I am on the strict instructions that if I start to feel unwell or my temperature reaches 37.7 I am to go straight back in. My temperature is currently sitting 37.5 so I suspect I am going to end up back in hospital tomorrow if it continues to climb. Failing that I am back on Monday for more observations and my gut feeling is I won't be getting back out till I have baby.

i am 35+2 today (tickers wrong), and just wonder if things took a turn for the worst and baby is to be born in the next few days what can I expect? I have an appointment on Thursday to speak to consultant about induction but I'll be 36 weeks by then - hoping to at least get that far.

While I haven't experienced it, I'm sure babies born around then are fine. They may need observation for a few days, and you getting the steroid shots will help. I read on here a girl had her baby at 32 weeks, and she just had to prove she was gaining weight okay, then could go home. I hope everything goes okay

Delilah was born at 34 weeks. She only was in the NICU for a week.

A friend of mine's daughter was born at 35 weeks and didn't need any additional time in the hospital as she was breathing fine, nursing fine, etc. Good luck and I hope all turns out well!

My twins were born at 35 weeks 3 days, I had steroid shots 2 weeks prior. One twin spent 10 days in the nicu, on cpap, feeding tube, and had a blood transfusion. They said it was to be expected at that gestation. He was 6 lbs 8oz too. They say boys don't do as well as girls.
I was surprised as it seems a lot of babies are fine at that gestation, my other twin didn't require any nicu time. But it just shows that you never know, and every day counts. He's perfect now but I wish I could've kept him in even another week and avoided all of that.

My lo was born at 36 weeks and really struggled to begin with, he was in scbu for two weeks although they told us it could be as much as 4 weeks before he was allowed home. The neonatal team took him straight away when he was born as he was wasn't breathing and was struggling with his heart rate and blood pressure. He had difficulty breathing and was on oxygen for over a week, they thought he might have sepsis and were treating him for that and he then struggled to feed and wasn't gaining weight so had to stay in.

The main difference in our situations are that I didn't have steroid injections and I also had an emergency caesarean. The nurses said that not going into labour or through the process of labour might have contributed to his problems as it doesn't prepare their lungs properly.

The hardest thing that I found was I completely wasn't expecting him to be that poorly especially when he was first delivered, seeing him in his incubator was the biggest shock for me

It sounds like your doctors are preparing yiu and baby well though so I'm hoping you'll both be ok

I was born around 4-5 weeks early (they weren't entirely sure as my mum had irregular periods) and I didn't have any problems breathing or anything. I spent some time in hospital under UV lights for jaundice, but that was all.

My last baby was born at 35+5. She was fine and could breathe on her own. She had to go into a hot cot and was monitored closely for the first 24 hrs or so. I didn't have any steroid injections, but she was born vaginally which helped, I think.

Every baby is different. There's no way you can predict exactly what a baby will be like. But please don't worry. Your team seem well-prepared and I'm sure everything will be handled well. They're obviously keeping a close eye on you.

My DD was born at 36 weeks, I didn't have any steroid injections. She was 5lb 1oz and the first night they were struggling to keep her temp up but once feeding was established we were fine to go home (although that took a week)

My girls were born at 34 weeks (after only 1 steroid shot) and 35+1 no steroids neither had any nicu time. They both stayed on the ward with me while having phototherapy for jaundice but that was there only issues.

My brother in law was born at 35 weeks, and had no problems. Besides being on the small side, they went home just fine when they were supposed to.

My son was born at 36+2 and had no issues except for slight jaundice.

My 35 weeker spent 3 weeks in the NICU establishing feeds. He was also on low flow oxygen due to the altitude but other than that he was perfect. I didn't have time to get steroid shots with him though.

I was born at 34 weeks weighing 4 pounds 11 ounces and apart from a touch of jaundice, I was fine - no breathing or feeding issues. This was back in 1977, so no steroid shots! Possibly those who have experienced giving birth at 35/36 weeks and finding their little ones have some difficulties may have been due to other factors than simply being a few weeks early. 36 weeks is just one week from being classed as full term.

Our dd was born at 36 weeks and 1 day. We also had the lung shot. She did great... no time in the NICU. The lung shots make a huge difference. Oh, and she was 6 lbs. 3 oz.

I delivered my 2nd at 35+5. His birth was scary and the first couple minutes but after he did wonderful! No NICU and we actually were discharged the same day. That being said, we lived in an extremely small city and had his first appointment the next day.

He was 8 lbs 3oz- dates were not wrong and no GD

My son was born at 36 weeks. My water broke unexpectedly and he was an emergency C-section because he was breech. He was fine! We stayed in hospital for about 4 days to be sure he was ok to go home. Other than that... He was good.

My first was born at 35 weeks +4 via induction with acute rupture of membranes and pitocin. She was 6lbs 8oz and was absolutely perfect. I'd had the steroid injection about 4 weeks prior. No nicu stay. She was jaundiced however and had two days under the lights.

DS1 was born at 30 weeks. He spent 6 weeks in but did well. A friend just had hers at 34 and stayed in 12 days. It depends on the baby, but generally at 35-36 baby is big and strong and will do fine xxx

Wow I am overwhelmed by everyones responses. Thank you so much for all the replies, very reassuring!

My apologies for not responding sooner. He is holding in there and we will be 36 weeks tomorrow and meeting with the consultant to discuss induction plans.

Been a bit of a rough week as I have not been keeping too well and babys heart rate has been alittle high on a few occassions. There was concern over infection at one point but that has been ruled out, it would seem the antibiotics are doing their job for now. I have also been taking some funny turns and after a 24 hour tape (where the strap a heart rate monitor to you for 24 hours) it was discovered that I am suffering from periods of really high heart rate and periods of low heart rate (50 on the low end and 150+ on the high end - at rest) which is causing my symptoms (breathless, hot flushes, dizzy, palpitations, light headedness etc) but thankfully it doesn't seem to be going into any funny rhythms etc so the doctors are hoping it will settle back down after I have the baby - if not then it will need investigating. I am not sure if this will have an effect on labor or birth but I can ask about this tomorrow at my consultants appointment.

I am hoping the combination of severe SPD, waters having gone and now whats going on with my heart that the consultant will agree to induce me within the next couple of weeks. I also have a son with Autism and at the moment he never knows if I am coming home from the hospital or not or whos going to be picking him up from school (I am being seen twice a week and they keep threatening to keep me in) and its starting to really unsettle him. feeling a bit fed up with all the uncertainty and worry.
