Babies born in the summer...what should they wear IN the hospital, and going home?

The weather is unpredictable here- even in the summer. I think a long sleeved onsie and a thin blanket would suffice. I'm sure they would feel more comfortable and safe if they were under a blanket.

Here is what I was told when I had DS: You dress a baby how you dress. So if I thought the room was a comfy temp, he went in like someone said a layette set. Going home, he went home in a shorts outfit as it is hot early sept in the south. My son was always swaddled tho when in the bassinet and in fact when he came from being registered with the hospital, he was wearing nothing but a long sleeve tee shirt, his diaper and a hat but he was swaddled.

My son since birth has his daddy's temperature (hot natured) so once he figured out how to take himself out of swaddling then he would unwrap himself.

stellababy - I will most likely be delivering at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose. I live in Malden, and my OB is through there. However, I have been told about some local birthing centers, and want to look into them. I would love a water birth! However, I need to ask my OB because I do like her and wouldn't want to have to switch doctors smack in the middle of my pregnancy.

*lurking* My son was born in June when it was hot. At our hospital they don't allow you to dress them...only for going home. They had him dressed in a long sleeve shirt for easy diaper changes and swaddled in a blanket with a hat.

I've heard the general rule of one extra layer (my son wore cotton footed pj's or onesie in a blanket in the beginning, and in the a/c he was swaddled in a thin receiving blanket). You want them to be warm, but too warm can be dangerous too.

i say short sleaved vest, and a baby grow on top... if baby is hot you can wip the top layer off easy and just pop a little light blanket over top. with layers you can adjust easy as you know how baby is xx

Stellababy- I was looking at South Shore Hospital as my ob's office is partnered up with them but Jordan Hospital is closer. I don't really like them much, though my last ER experience was a bit better than the other few I'd had over the years. They have a new birthing center there with water birth available (SSH does not have that anymore) and natural birthing promoted. DH and I are going to go on a tour soon to check it out.

i am going to be in Beth Israel in Boston. that's where my OB delivers babies and she did a great job with my daughter so i am repeating what i did the first time. i cant wait to meet the new munchkin

when you think about it baby has spent nine months at around 36deg celcius (sorry don't know farenheit) when they come out they can't regulate their temp so you need to dress them to keep them warm while you might feel hot or cold baby will not ffeel the same as you. I have always been told to dress them warmer than you have dressed yourself. If you think you have them too warm use a thermometer to check their temp.

I have always been told to dress the baby how I am dressed... not with an extra layer. There is no way I would put a baby in a long sleeved anything in hot weather. If you are in an air conditioned room, you can always add something if baby seems too cold.

I always thought the extra layer was an old wives tale.

my LO was born in may when it was boiling. In hospital he wore a vest and sleepsuit.
When i took him home he had a light blanket on.
After this i would dress him in a vest and short sleeved romper then add a thin cardigan if it was cooler.
