I have a friend who is about to be a first-time Mommy and is wondering what people think of the Baby Bjorn carrier vs the Ergo carrier. She is planning on getting a Moby wrap as well, and I have only ever owned/used a Moby wrap so I thought I'd try to get a bit of insight for her.

Outside of using a wrap...what are peoples' thoughts on either carrier?

That's a no brainer - ergo every time.

Honestly, the pain of carrying a baby more than about 16lb in a Bjorn type carrier...not good. Not to mention the fact LO is 'dangling' by their crotch which isn't good for their development.

Ergo style carriers are much better for LO (they sit, rather than dangle) you can carry a baby OR toddler in those comfortably.

I have never used a Bjorn baby carrier before but I love my ergo. Even now, with Leilah weighing 11kgs I can easily carry her around in it. Would totally recommend it.

We've had both - didn't get on at all with the ergo as a back carrier, but it was good for front carries and more comfy than the bjorn BUT my husband much prefers the bjorn. He finds it easier to put on and adjust so we actually kept the bjorn when we got rid of the Ergo. To be honest, I still carry Mog in the Moby sometimes or on my hip with a ring sling or pouch, but she's just too heavy to carry otherwise. It's disappointing, because I'd really hoped to be able to carry her on my back, but it's really not comfortable. Maybe I have a rubbish back.

I much prefer the Ergo. The Bjorn puts the baby in a dangling, awkward position that I wouldn't like to be in! Also, forward facing isn't recommended. I don't know anyone who used a bjorn past 6 months, but the Ergo will see a baby through to toddlerhood. Make sure your friend knows to buy from a recognised trader though. There are loads of dodgy 'Ergos' on ebay at the moment.

I think it's in her baby shower registry. She's in the States,

another vote for the ergo :) I currently carry Isla on my back with it and it's so comfy. I've only ever heard bad things about the bjorn style carriers

Ergo hands down here too. I inherited a Bjorn from a friend when Ronan was first born and while it was easier to get on, it was so uncomfortable that I barely used it.

I can happily use my Ergo now in a front or back carry and Ronan is tall and 23+ lbs. I have the worst back ever and am in constant pain, but can comfortably carry him in it for hours (I used it during 24 hours of travel in airports to and then again from Australia recently).

I have the Ergo and it's great! The company is really good too. The seam started coming out on the pocket section and they immediately sent me a new ergo!

I've never used the BB but everything I've heard from people who've used it is negative, backhurts, bad posture positioning for baby etc.

We used the bjorn when Imogen was a year old. So that's one person at least ;)

Another vote for Ergo here. My boy is 30lbs and when he's on my back, I can't feel a thing!

There are a load of issues with the Bjorn (yes, I'm aware some like it and that's fine, I think any babywearing is better than no babywearing at all) ~ particularly people using forward facing (not good for baby's neck/posture), not able to back carry, limited weight use for the price, the dangling issue, and that it often turns people off of babywearing because they think when babies outgrow the bjorn that babywearing is "done" ~ really, after 6+ months, it's just getting started! :)
