Hi mums,

I am just popping in because as a first time mum to be I found the vast array of bottles, and sterilisation systems mind boggling . I am planning to breast feed but have decided with OH that I'll express so that he can feed bubs too when he/she gets here.

Which brand of bottles are you using? How many bottles did you start with? What bottle sterilisation kits are you using? Is it worth getting the bottles for colic babies now? Any that you've tried that are awful? sorry for all the questions but I thought I could just buy any old ones until I started looking.:dohh: Thanks in advance ladies.

Its a good idea to get bottles even if you plan to breastfeed, for two reasons.
1 so you can express and 2 incase it doesnt go to plan and you need/want to give bottles.

anyways we use tommee tippee closer to nature :) we have the microwave steriliser and i never really liked avent always leaked.

I've used Tommee Tippee CTN since she was born. My MW told me that apparently the teats are softer than Avent so it's easier for her to eat. I use the TT Microwave Steam Steriliser aswell, and we have 4 bottles, haven't needed any more than that. I will mention that TT CTN bottles are anti-colic, and DD never had colic. But I might have just been lucky and the bottles had nothing to do with it.

We have successfully used Dr Browns, and also have Tommy Tippee but havent used them yet. And I dont sterlize - if you're feeding breastmilk in bottles and follow the storage and handling guidelines of the milk (eg how long its good for), then theres no need to sterilize IMO  ?

We love Dr Browns. Started with tommee tippee CTN as we bought the starter set which includes an electric steriliser. I know loads of people rave over these but for us the flow was too fast for lo even on smallest teat and he took so much air in and ended up with half the feed down his chin! The Dr Browns ones have really helped with the trapped wind so I'd recommend them quite strongly of your lo has wind issues x

Thanks guys

I hadn't seen Dr Browns bottles in the shops but there are lots of places on line to get them.

I won't bother with Avent.

So it seems to be between Dr Browns and Tommee tippee bottles.

Thanks Littleones about your opinion regarding sterilisation when breatsmilk is in the bottles. I just assumed that a steriliser would be needed. :)

Breast milk is sterile, but I would still sterilise equipment once a day (not after each use) to start with just to be on the cautious side.

You will find most bottles these days hav echanged thier shape to be more breast-like to help with combi feeding and feeding expressed milk. Avent have recently changed there teats to be alot more like the tommee tippee ones.

Im planning on using Dr Browns this time round. This is baby 3 and I would rather tackle potential colic issues before they arise! Also I did try tommee tippee with DD2 and I found that the valves in the teats were very tempremental and failed to work properly alot of the time. xxx

For me I find the simpler the bottle the better. With Earl I used Mothercare's Steriliser bottles, which you could sterilise in the microwave individually and this time I have boots own wide neck bottles. I tried MAM and they leaked like crazy and we really annoying but the teats were really nice and easy for Eddy to use. He's taken really well to the boots ones.

I swear by playtex ventaire advanced,i would never give my baby any other kind. They're awesome! I only sterilise new bottles one time only. After that i just clean them after each feeding.

i used an avent electric steriliser at beginning then tried the old fashioned sterilising tablets when i went away for wkend, i actually prefer these now and have packed my electric one away, much more convenient.

Tommee Tippee CTN bottles x6
TTCTN electric steam steriliser.
TTCTN variflow teats.

our LO has had colic so we use Infacol but i think it was my fault for not winding her enough :(
