hey ladies, I have been quite upset today after my mw app, I was booked in for a sweep, last week baby was 3/5ths engaged, but he has since disengaged and is now only 1/5th engaged, so the mw said she couldn't do the sweep as his head wasn't far enough down! I was gutted, I still don't have a date for
induction but have a mw app at hopsital on thurs so hopefully I will find out then and may be able to have a sweep! has this happened to anyone else? am I not likely to go in to labour anytime soon because he has moved back up? I really don't want to end up bein induced!x :'(

Mine was 4/5ths around 36 weeks but has been totally free floating since then. :(
However, this doesn't mean you wont go into labour. My MWs think I could still go at any moment. I have no signs though so I don't feel like that will happen...
However, I'm waiting on a hospital consult since they feel something may be wrong as this is my first and I'm not engaged at 40+ weeks, so if I do have signs of labour I have to call immediately  Talk about being confused. I want the baby to wait until after the consult so I know it's not in danger, but I'm overdue so I don't want it in there any more...

Although it hasnt happened to me, I believe it is a very common thing.

You may find baby decides to engage once labour gets going.

Good luck x

Hey Bky. I think we are in the same boat Hun except you are overdue - can you let me know what happens? Not engaged and due Friday with no signs. Got to go back to see somebody on Friday so they can decide the next step. I hope you are ok. I think they have to be careful when inducing when the baby is free so that the cord doesn't pop down first and squish. They won't take any risks with you but they will need to make a decision on the best way of getting bubba out if it's not going to engage. This is what I was explained to me at the hosp yesterday ( I still have until Fri so fingers crossed) My first baby too.

Mrs Hart2be, that must be very discouraging :( however, the lady yesterday said once it has started to engage - even if it's a little bit, you can be only a couple of contractions away of it engaging nicely. You can do it - the fact it has popped in place before is a great sign x I really hope it all just kicks off nicely for you soon x

i had exactly the same this week. baby was 2/5 engaged two weeks ago, but when i went this week, hes popped back up a bit and was only 1/5. midwife didnt say anything though and didnt seam concerned at all.
im next booked in for a 41 week appointment. does anybody know what they do if you get that far overdue and youre baby still isnt engaged properly? will they still induce you if they cant even do a sweep?x

mw at the docs told me that the hospital may try and do a sweep at my app on thurs, my docs and hospital are within two different nhs' so they have different policies. I was told by the hospital that they induce at 12 days overdue which would be Sunday for me, I assume on thurs they will book me in for induction on Sunday, I can't see why they won't if you can naturally start labour without baby being engaged?! when is your 41 week app?x

true, maybe they would just keep a close eye on you and the position of baby if you go into labour or are induced before baby is engaged.i am due thursday, and my next mw app is a week later. hoping i wont need it though and i go into labour naturaly!

I'm 7 days overdue and have had 2 sweeps even though baby isn't engaged! They haven't brought on any labour signs though except for a bit of bloody mucus yesterday!

I'm being induced on Thursday and my consultant said that if the head is still free and high they would break my waters in theatre so there isn't a problem with the cord!

Awkward babies we've all got :(

Happend to me Hun, lilys head only engaged when I was in labour. So it's pretty normal :) x

By theatre, do you mean, brake your waters then do immediate c-section?

LKAK - thanks for writing this. This is what I'm talking about but they hadn't told me what the plan would be and how they would induce if still high and free. Crossroads, I guess it just means they can act fast if the cord does pop down first. They have suggested an induction date of 41 weeks for me but wanted to discuss the plan if not engaged and still free. It makes sense now x

If my baby has not engaged by 41 weeks I want to arrange a c-section. Do you guys think this will be possible?

The plan for me isn't to do a c-section, however I think they will prepare for it just in case the cord does come down first. I will discuss it fully with them on Thursday when I go in for induction!

The consultant told me on Monday they would start the induction by giving me a tablet 'down below' (his exact words) when I go in at 2pm, they'll repeat this 6 hours later if need be and another 6 hours after that if the previous 2 haven't worked. If the 3 attempts with the tablets don't work they will take me to labour ward on Friday and start me on the drip! My consultant said if the head is still free and high they would break my waters in theatre but they'll assess that on the day!

I'm hoping to not need a c-section but obviously will do anything that ensures baby arrives safely!

Crossroads I'm not sure if you can have an elective c-section under those circumstances, wouldn't hurt to ask though if that's what you want!

Laura x

Yes you can request a c-section, but you can still be induced when babys head not engaged, I couldn't have a sweep because of this but I was induced twice then she became engaged, I was then induced a third time as nothing happened, then they broke my waters. They can still induce when babies heads not engaged :)

Oh that's good!

So it is possible to schedule a c-section on the NHS for the reason that the baby is past its due date an remains unengaged.

The MW's are concerned that either the cord is in the way preventing engagement (and risk of prolapse), the baby is too big to engage or my pelvis is too small ( I can't imagine how this is possible). So I have to go in for another scan and some measurements I presume and then depending on what they find they may book me in for a section. :( Or everything could be fine and my baby could just be stubborn.
