I'm looking for positive experiences maybe?

My newborn son failed the UK standard hearing test at birth - thinking nothing of it and putting down to noisy ward and newborn mucus (6h old) I wasn't concerned.

Yesterday he failed the repeat test and then didn't 'respond at the levels required' in the more in depth test with the electrodes. We've got to go again next week and repeat the electrodes testing at different frequency??

He's 3w old. Does this mean he his deaf?

So concerned:nope:

I don't have any personal experience, but just wanted to offer a big virtual :hugs: i am sure that it is very scary, and stressful to be in the situation you are in. I would say it is best to try and stay calm- wait for further tests, and listen to what the specialists tell you. I know that there is a wide range on the spectrum of hearing loss if your son does have any hearing problems at all. Im not sure what level the tests can detect an issue.

I really hope you get good news, and your little one will pass future tests. If not and you find yourself worrying, look into deaf culture. It is unique, and a wonderful testament to how hearing loss doesn't have to be all negative. I have seen huge groups of deaf people on holiday a couple of times now, and it is amazing to see them all signing on such a large scale.

Wishing you lots of luck :flower: I hope someone with personal experience will come along shortly.

My baby failed the first test, with the little earbuds, so she had to have the more sensitive test with teeny little headphones stuck to her and sensor pads. She didn't like that! I had to feed her to stop her crying.
The nurse explained that there are many non-serious reasons to not get a clear response, like baby having a bit of a cold, more earwax than is usual, or even having a chesty cough.

My DD failed 4hrs after birth & they put that down to too soon/water birth, she passed on her retest at approx 10 days old.
My friends LO (also water birth) failed at birth & retest but passed with the little headphones on. He's now 14m and deff nothing wrong with his hearing apart from being a bit selective lol.
Does your DS startle at loud noises? This is what I found assurance from while waiting for the retest. xx

No DS doesnt startle to loud noise even alarm bells, hooters etc - we've tried as the audiologist asked me to.

He failed the ABR - the sticky pad electrodes too and we're back next week to do them again at a different frequency.

Just a little concerned :-/

My DD failed her newborn test, then a repeat, and a 3rd repeat with pads stuck to her head, and then a test with the audiologist (some hearing recorded in one ear and other gave a flat response) when she was a few weeks old. I was really worried, especially as she didn't really respond to loud noises. There is also a history of hearing loss in my family (my brother has moderate loss and my uncle is deaf) so it seemed like the odds were stacked against her. But then she had a repeat test a couple of weeks later and her good ear was at a great level and her bad ear registered sound. After that her hearing got better and better, she responded to noises (turning her head if you made a noise out of sight for example) and soon her hearing was great. I don't know why her hearing was so bad at first as she wasn't very mucousy and hadn't had any issues with fluid at birth. We were told that some babies just take a while to get up to full capacity. Really hope that is the case for your LO! :hugs:

Thank you for your uplifting story. It gives me home because I am just thinking the worst to be honest yet we have no reasons for it - no family history, normal pregnancy, straightforward birth etc.

He's now 3.5w and no response to loud noises. We have our third test on Wednesday - the second ABR one and hoping he'll register something.

I'm glad your story ended positively! X

Bit of an age gap but we were told our now 4 year old, was profoundly deaf and was consulted about cochlear implants and told about schools for deaf children but turns out she just had really bad glue ear(very annoyed at doctors but that's another story) so there may be mucus or another reason behind your child's lack of hearing. But I hope you get a positive ending:hugs

Good luck for tomorrow. Think positive thoughts xxx

My oldest failed the new born test in hospital and a follow up at three weeks. He also had a test when he was 8 months I think it was which was much more in depth and this was inconclusive as he didn't react the way they expected on every test. He can hear, he is quite sensitive to certain types of noise but he doesn't have hearing loss. He has had another test at school recently and it was absolutely fine.

Good luck for your next test

Good luck today. I hope everything turns out ok.
