Baby Inspection....

Anyone else feel like the baby weigh ins with the health visitors are like a baby inspection?

They look them over and weigh them then tell you if youve passed or failed! I got told she had "good weight gain" yesterday. Gold Star for me! Another parent got a telling off for bringing their baby in with chicken pox.

The one I go to they take you in a little room after babys been weighed to talk to you. It feels like going in the headmasters office!

one reason why i go as little as possible, the HV is a complete wet blanket but always turns me in to a stuttering wreck! we declined the 10 day visit and the hearing test and i got quizzed why we were declining such an important test!
At the end of the day its up to us! might go to one of the other local clinics.

Ours is a wham bam thank you mam jobby ...

They get you in and out as fast as poss, makes you feel bad for actually wanting to ask a question :(

Mines on the middle of a dodgy council estate maybe thats why its like it is....

It did make me really nervous. Like when you go through passport control at an airport. You know you havent done anything naughty but you still feel like they are going to arrest you and throw you in jail!

wow that's awful, glad I don't live there!! My pediatrician is actually very nice. She is usually in a hurry but if I have any questions she'll answer them for me

Ours is a bit like PP's! However, they usually manage to make a comment which makes you feel bad even if it's the only thing they say to you! I usually just take Ally to the children's centre as you can use the scales there yourself. No prying HV eyes!

i always felt like this with lilly, its like they want to make sure you aren't abusing the child - which i suppose is good, they are looking out for the childs well being but then they have to impart advice that really isnt needed or wanted and lets face it - they make you feel like you're not doing a good enough job....

much prefer the midwifes

Thats why i only ever go to mine if its absolutely necessary. Last time i went about 3wks ago she made me feel like crap. Told me callum was underweight, even tho he has stayed just under the 50th percentile since birth and he had had a sickness and diarrohea bug the previous few days and hadnt ate anything. She also said she wanted him back in 3mths to review his speech!! Hes 15mths and says more than my 2yr old nephew, made me feel like a total failure.

Oh and another time when he had just started walking, he had a tiny bruise on his head and she was asking me all these questions like how did he bump his head, where did he bump his head etc.. i was made to feel like i was abusing him or something.

Sorry for the rant, but they really get my goat!!

our's is like that! its actually in our doctor's surgery, and they just call you in like you would go to the doctors, you turn up when you wont. they can be very judgemental! normally i get the nice one, and mum often comes with me and she looks like she's about to pounce on them if they start being funny  this is only because they've been funny before to me, and she's not normally like that

I would shake everytime I went to the clinic, couldn't get Bethanie's clothes on/off properly. Luckily the health visitor at my local clinic was a lovely lady, always seemed to be listening and understanding my concerns.
I did always feel very nervous when she got weighed though, even though no comments were made - this was probably more because we were told by hospital staff that we'd overfed her when she was sick in her sleep and we took her to A&E (NHS Direct got us an ambulance actually) just to be on the safe side. I rarely took Bethanie to the clinic though, especially as she got older.

I would prob burst into tears if they questioned me about a bruise like that!

I don't go to mine at all. I'll actually be refusing HV visits once this next sprog comes, I just can't be doing with it.

I took Harry to the clinic to be weighed for the first time yesterday. Because of the rash he's got at the moment, and the number of doctors and trips to A&E, he's been weighed LOADS, so haven't needed to go until this week. Health Visitor did come over and start going on about his rash, telling me what she thinks it is. Everyone seems to have an opinion about what his rash is... just a shame they're all very different opinions! She thought it was some sort of heat rash! He's (currently) being treated for eczema, has had a course of antibiotics and has also been treated for baby acne - all very different from heat rashes!

Its weird at mine, all the mums sit in the chairs waiting for their turn to be called up you have to strip your LO's off whilst everyone is watching, then they come over and tell you if the weight gain is good enough or not and you have to talk through any questions etc in front of everyone! Its a little embarassing at times.

They never seem to have enough time for anyone and some of the advice they give is just rubbish, its quite shocking they still give out such old advice, my HV told me that now she is over 6mnths she doesn't really need milk and solids should be replacing her milk entirely!!

How ridiculous!

Wow I can't believe they told you that about solids, it's shocking to me the things that come out of some "experts" mouths.

After hearing alot about HV I'm very glad we don't live in the UK for that reason lol. I've heard tons of horrible advice from them and them being really judgemental, though I'm sure it happens with pediatricians here as well. We have an amazing pediatrician, and if I for one second felt judged or uncomfortable I would be going to another. We don't vaccinate, extended breastfeeding, extended rear facing, no solids til 6mo...and it's all things our dr agrees with, though she does recommend some vaccines she isn't judging at all
