Baby Just Won't Eat!

Hi, has she been checked for posterior tongue tie? There's info about it on the breastfeeding boards. Basically a posterior tongue tie restricts the up/down movement of the back of the tongue which can hinder latching and sucking and also feeding from a bottle. Tongue tie babies can take in a lot of air as they feed which can contribute to tummy troubles.

She has never been evaluated properly for this...just early on seen by a lactation specialist that said she had a high palette which could have contributed to her not latching properly,,, i will ask her pediatrician...

High palate can be caused by tongue tie, the tongue can't lift to spread the palate in utero.

Edit: just seen above post (didn't realise there was a second page :dohh:
Wow! This is something I will ask my pediatrician about... I didn't know this. Is there a way to tell on our own if she is tongue tied? Can it be obvious?

High palates are very common with tongue tie. The tongue forms the palate in utero and if it's tied babies often end up with high palates from not being able to move it properly. My LO had hers clipped twice. It never really seemed to help much with BF (my nipple always came out creased regardless) but she did seem to have a much easier time with the bottle after the first clipping. Not getting as tired or taking an eternity to finishing a bottle. Another thought is what size nipples are you using? We just switched to medium flow and that seemed to help also.

She has been making progress today so it seems she may have been feeling ill but the feeding has always been a problem just even more pronounced when sick.... You have raised a new perspective for me... I left the to gue tied thoughts behind when I closed the breadtfeeding door but now I'm thinking when I go in I will ask about tongue tie... Thank you! Your daughters name is close to mine! My lo is Olive!

Sorry, I didn't see your reply because the thread got moved. Put your finger under LO's tongue and run it left and right. If you feel a 'fence' in the middle that's a tie.

So is it supposed to be completely smooth? My husband and I both have a "fence" i think...

So I called my doctor and she thinks that my LO prob does not have tongue tie...blah blah blah...that it doesn't "look" that way...but affter you ladies mentioned posterior I thought it may be something difficult to see...

I am thinking about going to an ent and getting it checked out myself...

FYI- My LO seems to be doing well...she is feeling better and eating more...she is still all over the place with eating but better...if she did have a tongue tie,,,it may have stretched now a little and that is why she is better but I am curious to know because of the struggle I had with breastfeeding...imagine..if that is what it was...if I only knew to push the issue...she would have been on the breast still...but who knows...I'm just surprised the lactation consultant never mentioned it as a possiblilty...anyway if I end up goung to ENT i will update this post...thank you for all your responses...

PS- my husband and I tried to see if she has it and it just seems so difficult to tell...

My lg is 10.5 months and has had feeding problems since birth. She has severe reflux and also a cows milk protein allergy. Shes now on Omeprazole, Domperidone and gaviscon and Neocate milk and its much better controlled. Shes still verry funny with her milk and ive just learnt to accept it. I know that its easier said than done! trust me ive cried so many times wishing she would feed normally. But shes a healthy girl, not very big but not underweight, very happy and i try and concentrate on that :) x

I just noticed that you're in NY. Whereabouts if you don't mind me asking? My husband sometimes calls Olivia his little Olive. Lovely name!

I'd be in trouble if I lived there! Yes, Brooklyn here. :) If you want to get an evaluation for tongue tie google Dr. Lawrence Kotlow. He revised LO's tongue tie the second time and is considered the expert on ties. People travel to him from all over! When we were there someone was coming from North Carolina. He's in Albany.
