My son is 3 weeks old today - at his 2 week weigh-in he was still 60 grams below his birthweight. In the last 5 days he has only put on 60 grams... the mw said this was on the low side - I will be bringing him back to be weighed again next week.

Of course this has left me fretting and worried :( He feeds approx. every 3 hours (sometimes more sometimes less) - generally for 10 minutes on each breast (sometimes less during the day). The mw suggested I have him suck for 20 minutes on one breast, offering the other if he wants more, otherwise changing breast at the next feed.

Anyone had similiar experience? Any tips?

Can low weight-gain affect his early development?

xx

Alyssa has been a slow weight gainer too and fed on demand (and still does). I let her feed until she releases the latch herself, then I know she's had her fill. If she wants more, I then offer the other breast; otherwise, I offer the other breast at her next feed.

Low weight gain has in no way negatively affected Alyssa - it has been commented more than once that she's bright for her age and is developing well. Biggest tip I can offer is not to stress; all babies gain weight at a rate that is right for them. As long as he is having plenty of wet nappies and isn't losing any more weight, then he should be just fine. I let myself get worried and stressed early on when Alyssa was little, and now realize that she's perfect and is simply growing at the rate that is just right for her. Now that she's on solids, she's gaining weight faster - although she's still slim and VERY long.

Try not to worry - sounds like you're doing really well. Please feel free to PM me if you'd like to chat :hugs:
