Baby or no baby?

Hi,

I'm new here and have a question... have any of you had negative test results that later turned positive? I felt ovulation on the 7th September and had (as one website put it) somehow been exposed to sperm the day before - so I realised that I *could* be pregnant and have been looking for signs. A few days later my nipples hurt to touch. Last week I got cramping -same as I normally get the day of my period, but a week early. My period is like clockwork, it was supposed to show up yesterday but didn't. It felt like it was going to start yesterday morning, but didn't. Nothing today - no cramps or anything. My breasts feel heavier, though not painful. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I had really bad nausea (no vomiting), but nothing yesterday or today. The sore nipples stopped on Monday too. So I took a home test this morning (1 day late and it said you can test the day you're due), it was negative. So I went to the doctor for a test because I just can't stand not knowing... he said it's negative and we'd better start you on birth control pills. I asked him for a blood test to confirm, but I'm going to have to wait till Monday for the results.

So has anyone had a urine test at the doctor that came back negative when they were actually pregnant? And how acurate are the blood tests - if it comes back negative does that mean that I'm definately not pregnant? If I am pregnant it will be 4 weeks and 1 day - is that too soon to tell? I wasn't sure how I felt about this "pregnancy" until I saw the negative result... I so want this to be positive.

Some women do not show positive on a test until a while after period is due. I have heard a blood result can be wrong but not sure how true that is you either have a level of hCG or not above 10 is classed as pregnant although some want a higher level to confirm (my hosp wanted above 20).

I have experience with the doctors test being neg when my clearblue was positive (boldly) ... But a diff outcome on that pregnancy.

As for symptoms its amazing how many you notice when your looking for it try to ignore them at the moment for you own sanity

I agree with Wobbles! I am in the same situation, and she's right - you seem to "find" symptoms when you suspect you are pregnant! I go to the doctor today for a blood test so I won't know anything until next week. Trying to ignore my symptoms (as much as you can ignore nausea, cramps and boobs that hurt!) and just wait it out.... Good luck!!

I am exactly the same at the moment, no sign of my period and all these symptoms, then I think to myself am I imaging these symptoms, are they there because I want them to be. Oh and had 3 negative tests but still no period, so I know exacrtly how you feel, we still hope and hope despite the negatives that the positive will turn up the next day.

Thanks for the luck!! I certainly hope I'll have some good news next week - otherwise, I am convinced that I am crazy!! I am off of my bcp until my next period arrives, so even if I am not pg now, well, I could be soon haha! My DB is not so good at abstinence and to be honest well, neither am I!

Ok here's my update. I took another hpt last night (couldn't resist) and got a bfp REALLY happy about it. Then just before I went to bed last night, I noticed some pink discharge when I wiped. I woke up at 2am with bad cramps. I often get bad cramps with my period, but usually take something... but I didn't know what was safe, so it felt worse than normal. I went to the bathroom and I was bleeding. Not as heavy as my periods usually are, but definately flowing and dark red (almost black). It's carried on this morning... but it's very different to my normal period. I'm wearing a pad but there hasn't been much blood on the pad. When I go to the loo though, there is quite a lot of blood and little blood clots (tiny really). I'm still having mild cramps.

So I'm trying to figure out what this means... was it a false positive? Or was I pregnant and lost it? Or is there still hope? I've found a few references to people who have had what seemed like normal periods and still been pregnant... but maybe I'm just grasping at straws. Has anyone here had a positive then bleeding (not just spotting) and remained pregnant?

I'm still bleeding. I phoned the doctors office - they said there is nothing they can do to prevent loosing the baby this early so unless the bleeding gets very heavy there is no need to come in. It's difficult to judge how much blood there is because it's not really soaking the pad (I only used one pad the whole of yesterday), but when I go to the bathroom there is enough blood to turn the water red. I'll go to the doctor next week for an internal check up, but I think I have to accept it's over.
I'm just feeling soooo sad. I've wanted a baby forever, even went so far as to look for sperm donors a couple of years ago. And then I fell in love, but this has kind of killed the relationship. The last week has made me see things in him that I didn't want to see before. So I think I'm trying to let of go of the baby that wasn't meant to be and the person I thought he was.

Try not to make a quick decision on your r,ship. Although I cannot comment because I don't know the whys its just I know if its things over baby worry if everything is ok or not man & woman are totally different ...

If she's not wiping away to much blood from herself but there is alot of blood in the toilet afterwards, i would suggest there might be something wrong in the bladder, for example a UTI (urinary tract infection) which can be fixed easily with anti bi's.. A uti is common early on in pregnancies because the body is trying to cope and react with the new surroundings etc..

Thanks for all your messages. I've had two days of bleeding, less than my normal period but still quite a bit, 1 day of light bleeding and today is just spotting. It's definately not bladder bleeding - it's like a period just lighter, and ending sooner (I normally have 6 days of heavy to medium bleeding). I couldn't get an app until next Wednesday, so frustrating. I had pretty much given up hope, but today I had bad nausea (never been so happy to feel sick). So I'm still in limbo land. I'm too scared to take another hpt. I'm not ready to let go.

Thanks again for all your support... no one but the father knows that I'm going through this and he lives 12 hours away. So it's great to have people I can talk to.

PS: to wobbles... thanks for your message, but his biggest baby worry was how to tell the girlfriend I thought he had broken up with before we ever slept together. It's complicated and I must admit I didn't question him too closely - but I love him and was just so happy that he wanted me too.
