I'm sitting here crying as I bf my baby girl. She is 6 days old and so far has been a great eater. This morning she went 5 hours in between feedings and I was trying for over an hour to wake her up! Cold wash cloth, stripped to diaper, cold water on her feet, and finally I had to give her almost a cold bath!! I was starting to panic, she is slightly jaundice and the dr wants her to feed every two hours!! She finally woke up enough to eat but now I am so worried! Is something wrong with her? She doesn't have a fever or any other reason to think she could be sick, just super sleepy and didn't want to wake to eat!

The first couple of days i had Isaac i was trying to follow the rules about feedin every so often but he just wouldnt feed at night! I used to set an alarm and everything and was loosing out on valuable sleep. I know its different for you as your baby has jaundice but if you cant wake him then leave him for an hour and try again. Please dont upset yourself over it im sure your lo will make up for it when she wakes up.

I've found there is always something they absolutely don't like and thus it will wake them up properly, for my youngest it is being put on my baby weighing scale, he really hates it. It sounds cruel but when they are newborn you have to be cruel to be kind. Having said that as long as your baby is feeding well otherwise the occasional 5 hour stretch in 24 hours won't do any harm even if its before they get back to their birthweight or they are slightly jaundiced. My youngest in the first couple of weeks went one stretch of 7 hours and one stretch of nearly 9 hours overnight, though he has been cluster feeding for a few hours before that on both occasions, still I was really worried when I woke up in the morning and saw the time. Thankfully though there was no problem, he got up to his birthweight by 16 days and when he was hungry those mornings he woke up himself looking for food. My second eldest would sleep 12 hour stretches from the first week but he was a huge baby who didn't lose any of his birthweight, was only superficially jaundiced and often gained a pound a week despite seeming to have fewer and shorter than average feeds. I'm sure your baby will be fine xx

Thank you ladies, she has actually been feeding on demand every 1 1/2 hour since this morning, so I feel like she is making up for it. I feel a lot better now :)

My daughter was jaundiced and once slept for 5 hours and it was during the night so I was asleep too and it scared me too but she definitely made up for it when she woke.. Jaundiced babies are more tired so nothings wrong with her just make sure she eats good and has plenty of yellow poops.

Mickey was exactly the same at that age. It caused me no small amount of stress! But he's fine now. Glad she's feeding now x

How scary, I would be panicking too. She's probably ok but I would ring the hospital just for peace of mind.
