Big baby

Wow and I was worried about how "huge" the claims are that my baby is going to be (by my OB). At the 34 week scan he was estimated at 5.9 lbs and some of you ladies are around that weeks before me!

I do have GD though and I have been told if he is not too big at the next scan on the 7th, they will induce at 39 weeks, otherwise a bit earlier!

I have had a lot of growth scans due to type 1 diabetes - at 33 weeks they told me my baby was 5lbs but then at 35 weeks I was told 7 pounds 5 ounces. I did question it as I know a baby is supposed to put on 1/4 to 1/2 pound a week so max of a pound in 2 weeks and this was supposedly a 2 pound 5 ounce increase. The doctor says he thinks either the 33 week or 35 weeks scan is inaccurate because there can be a 10% difference either way.

My last baby was 8 pounds 3 ounces at 38 weeks and I was hoping this one would be about the same else they will push for a C-section but now I do not trust the ultrasound measurements anyway. Will have to wait and see what the 37 week one says when a decision will be made on when/if to induce.

Me too... I had a scan yesterday and baby is 6lb8oz already apparently, which is kind of what I thought. DS was 8lb10 when he was born so this baby seems to be on track for the same.

how do you get these growth scans estimations on weight and size etc? Ive never had a growth scan, or an estimation of weight/size. Most the midwife has done was measure fundus height on the odd appointment but said up to 3 cms ahead or under is fine. I am in the UK, north east specifically. Ive had 2 10 pounders before but midwives are not concerned at all, neither am I! Bring on my fatty lirrel girl! :D

eesh "2 ten pounders" makes my boys sound like prize chickens or something haha, I LOVE EM to bits!

big bub size is supposed to correlate with Mam's height, Dad's height and Mams birth weight ( I am 5ft 9, my Chris is 6ft 2 and i was 9lb 6 oz when i popped out one day early)

My and my oh were both 6lbers along with our first born, this one is heading for about 9-10lbs!
I don't have diabetes and all babies in my family have been average! Think this ones just bucking the trend!

All I know is they won't induce me early if she carries on but might do before 40+12 which is the lastest my hospital will do it

I think a midwife or doctor must send you for a growth scan - most people with GD or diabetes prepregnancy will be sent for rwoth scans and also people who measure very big with fundal measurements and that they think may have trouble giving birth vaginally. Then you go for a growth scan. It also depends where you are stayin - with the care I am under now everyone who sees this doctor is given scans every appointment where he measures femur length, head and abdomen circumference to get a growth estimate.

at my 30 week appointment, the MW said, the fundal height was equal to 32-33 week. She said he is growing too fast but did not seemed worried neither did she recommend any other test or anything but a regular 30 week blood test for Hb and Glucose. I am just 5 ft myself and at an earlier ultrasound, the specialist had said that he was smallish but since both hubby and I are not tall, that should be normal. What makes me worried is that is his sudden increase in size something to be concerned about regarding normal birth or any other issues? Should I take it up with MW when i see her next?

they scans can be very out we were told chloe would be no bigger than 8lbs if born on time and she was 9lbs 12 at 6days late (once overdue they dont really get any bigger either) so dont trust the scan hunni you can never really tell they weight from them things. Up to a certian point in pregnancy all baby's grow at same rate thats why they can date you accuratly later on in pregnancy baby's have growth spurts at different points so he may have literally just had his growth spurt or something x

My Doc gives me a growth scan at every visit, that's every 3 weeks to a month. He says measurements from one scan alone doesn't tell much, sometimes even skewed readings. What doctors look for is a trend in measurements.

Ethan is about 3 weeks taller and larger than he should be for the past 4 scans. Doc said that it's just fine and could most likely be caused by genes :)
