This is my birth story- a couple people have asked and I'm not exactly shy....
Friday morning, I got sent to the hospital after a scheduled sonogram at 39 weeks. They told me it looked as if I had "low fluid" and they wanted to induce. Tim's sister Amy met us at the hospital and they left together to go back to our house and get our bags. I got checked in and was sitting alone in my hospital room. I heard a woman down the hallway screaming in horrible pain. I started to doubt myself "maybe I should beg/demand a c-section" - it was a great thing I was alone because I was able to search deep for strength and remind myself to be strong for the baby.
The nurse came in and told me "Since it was already so late in the day- they would insert 'Cervidil' now and pitocin at 8 AM Saturday morning. She said I should expect for nothing to happen until the pitocin, and expect to be in labor ALL day Saturday."
Inserting the Cervidil was EXTREMELY painful. She was nearly on top of me in my bed trying to hold me down while she put it in because I was crawling away from her. I was hooked up to IV's, monitors, BP cuff- and I wasn't allowed to drink/ eat/ walk. The nurse took pity on me later in the night and gave me some soup.
The next nurse on the shift change was an angel. She let me stand up by my bed and pace around a little. Doing that gave me cramps, but I watched a couple movies standing. I was cramping regularly after watching 'Brave'.
At around 11PM the regular cramping was getting rough, but nothing horrible. I asked the nurse (Sheri) to remove the Cervidil. It didn't hurt at all during removal, she checked me. I was 4 centimeters. I asked her what that means and she said I should still prepare myself to be in labor tomorrow after the pitocin.
The regular contractions continued, more and more painful! My husband Tim was AMAZING during this time. The pain was rough, BUT it only lasted about a minute, then I would get a very short break from the pain! (Felt a lot like my period cramps- only with my period, I never get the short breaks from pain!) But Tim stayed with me and that helped so much.
At 1AM, the nurse checked me and said I was at a 7-8. I asked for an epidural. The nurse said " I was wondering when you would ask!?" I was still in denial that I was in labor without the pitocin. I did not know that Cervidil alone could cause the baby to come.
The anesthesiologist came in at 1:30 AM with his cart but right then, he got an emergency call!!! He left me!! It was another 45 minutes of VERY serious pain before I was given the epidural. I never screamed or even cried. I turned 'inward" and I could hear Tim and the nurse talking to me, but I didn't/couldn't respond.
The epidural did not hurt being placed- but I did have 3 contractions WHILE he was placing it. It was hard to stay still and then my water broke. It was an insane amount of water... like I was sitting in a pond. "Low water" my ass! But I felt great. I told that man that he was my hero. The nurse put my husband and I to bed with a smile.
At 3ish AM- (just bearly enough time for me to doze off) I woke up Tim because I was certain there was a watermelon coming out of my butt- (sorry, no other way to describe it) The nurses poured into my room and helped me breathe through contractions until my doctor got there. I pushed 5-6 times. The last time I decided in my mind that I didn't care how much it hurt, it was time. I give it everything I had and my baby was born.
No pitocin, No catheter.... in my opinion, it was perfect.
