Our perfect baby girl, Lily Joy Smith, entered the world at 5.19 on September 27th.
She was born, as planned, at home and into water with no intervention and no drugs other than gas and air. Thank you for all who prayed for this birth, as we truly believe it was the best experience for her and for us, and we really felt Gods hand of blessing and empowerment throughout the entire thing.
She weighed 8 pounds and a little bit, and was so impressive all the way through the labour, as she was born with the cord wrapped four times around her neck, and yet was completely calm and peaceful the entire time, her good strong but mellow heartbeat testament to this.
Labour lasted for 24 hours from when Lizzies waters broke the day before. Lizzie managed by breathing through contractions and using the TENS machine and pool for 14 hours of that, before asking for a little help from her new friend Gas and Air (amazing stuff!!!) She was then able to rest a little through the latter stages of contractions before going back into the pool for the pushing stage, which she did without the gas and air for the most part (only taking a few puffs for the crowning of the head!)
We had the best midwife care imaginable, they were all friendly, caring and nurturing, and completely supported all our choices and helped us maintain an amazingly calm and quiet atmosphere throughout. Our doula Lucy was also invaluable, only taking over from Neil when he left Lizzies side to get a quick drink or use the bathroom. (which was hardly ever he was amazing!!).
Lizzie only had one largish graze, and was able to birth the placenta naturally within 10 minutes of the birth. She was also able to give Lily her first feed within 45 minutes of birth, but that was mainly down to Lily as she did it by herself!
We are so so happy, we couldnt be more pleased with the birth experience God has blessed us with. We feel utterly in awe of this new life, and of the amazing way in which God designed our bodies to do this miraculous thing.
