Sorry in advance for how long this is!
Firstly a bit of background info. I'd been measuring small for weeks and had a growth scan at 37wks which estimated my little boy to be just under 6lb. Consultant was still considering induction due to episodes of reduced movements and the fact I'd had whooping cough in my third trimester (different story, awful illness!)
I'd been having braxton hicks more and more frequent over the first weekend of February so thought I'd get walking to see if it could help move things along. On Tuesday 4th Feb I went for a long walk with my friend who was due the day after me. We were out for about an hour and then came home to pick our daughters up from pre school. We arranged to meet later at our nearest Tesco to do some shopping as neither of us wanted to be going alone at 39wks pregnant. My baby was also having a quiet day so was monitoring movements.
Walking around the shop I was getting what I thought were braxton hicks, just more painful. Mentioned to my friend and we started timing them. They were coming approx every 8mins. Got in car to drive home and called hospital as baby was definitely not moving as much and was told to come in. Called DH to come home and in laws to come and look after DD.
Got to hospital at 4:30pm and pains were continuing in frequency but becoming more painful. Assesment unit was very busy so at 6pm they took me to labour ward as it was quiet so they could monitor me. Hooked up to monitor and found tom be having contractions. BP was high and protein in urine so blood taken to rule out pre-eclampsia. Due to contractions and BP midwife decided to check me and see if I was dilated. Turns out I was 2-3cm but cervix still a bit long. She did a sweep (not painful at all) and said I'd need to stay at least 4hrs for blood results and so they could re check me. Due to my high risk status and medical history midwife wasn't comfortable sending me home in case I was straight back up.
Decided to go for a walk to get some drinks. Wasn't out long when I was having to stop and breathe through contractions coming every 4mins. Went back to labour ward and continued to breathe through contractions all the while thinking 'if this isn't labour and just because of the sweep then I'm in trouble lol'.
Around 8pm they put me back on monitor. Contractions still coming every few minutes. Told me they would be checking me at 10pm. Just before 10pm babys heart rate suddenly went from being 160 to 55. I heard it barely beating and screamed at DH to get someone. He ran out and immediately the room was full of midwives and doctors. Doctor checked me and found I was 4cm and said she was breaking my waters. Waters broken at 10:03pm and thankfully clear. She also checked for cord to see if it was coming first but again thankfully not. Gave me the gas and air and continued to monitor heart rate which thankfully came back up.
Epidural was requested and in place by 11pm. Although it worked, I could feel pressure in my right hip so during some contractions was using gas and air to relieve that feeling. Checked again at 2am and was fully dilated so left for an hour to let baby come down. Started pushing at 3am and Henry James Carl Dean came into the world at 4:23am weighing 8lb 2oz!!!!
All that worry about having a small baby turned out to be wrong! He is perfect and I am totally in love with my new son.
Thanks for reading if you made it to the end! X
