I got blood work done a week ago, and the counts are low: hemoglobin is 9.6, hematocrit is 28.9 and platelets are 114. I have the thalassemia minor trait, and have been a vegetarian for about 5 years now. I'll be seeing a specialist soon, but wondering - is everything okay?

I would say your HB indicates anaemia and your platelets are low, I only say that because I am prone to anaemia non pregnant but I have just has a low platelet reading of 118 and I have to have a rpt done this week to make sure it has not gone any lower.

I take Iron supplements when my HB gets low, but it has been fine so far this pregnancy, I take folic acid still as i am B12 deficient and sometimes that can influence platelet readings...

Vitamin suppleements would help boost your levels along with eating foods high in iron etc

x hope my experience helps a little but if you google low platelets in pregnancy that gives a more clear picture on how it is monitored and how it can and can not affect pregnancy, it doesnt always mean there is something wrong I think the level has to be fair bit lower than ours before it can be considered a risk in certain aspects of pregnancy birth and labour.
